Proper nutrition and its maintenance had been one of the most intriguing focuses in the world today. The determining factor in the total health of an individual seems to be a thing that is very hard to catch and get that even the most advance machineries cannot offer any help. It is, indeed, even separating itself from people, whom are which hypnotized by the hex of technos and gizmos. Thus, people nowadays are attacked by illnesses and diseases, most of which leading to the extinction of life, the abolition of existence in the world.
One of the factors involved in the attainment of proper nutrition is eating. The hectic world today provides a view of a high number of people eating just to satisfy hungry stomachs without considering any nutritive value of the food being taken. Most food establishments, restaurants, and markets offer instant food, many of which are acknowledged and favored by majority and yet considered as the worst to human health. Reality speaks that the food appeal is taken into consideration rather than its nutritional content.
La Rochefoucauld once said: “To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art,” thus pointing to the actuality of a call toward reorientation of the people between eating and health. Modern gadgets will not provide the nutrition one needs in his stay on the grounds of earth. Prevailing devices neither science can’t provide any help in the upbringing of one’s health. It is still the nature and discipline of an individual that counts in the end.
Good nutritional status is noted when man benefits from a well-balanced dietary intake, manifested in a normal organ development and function, normal reproduction, growth and maintenance, optimum activity and working efficiency, resistance to infection and ability to repair bodily damage or injury. Thus, a well-balanced diet, daily exercise, and practice of discipline reveals the necessary things one must have to attain good nutrition.
Proper nutrition means invincibility to diseases. Recently (even up to now), the world was embraced by the endemic Influenza A (H1N1) virus, an illness that killed a lot of human and left the world with fear and anxiety. This shows that most people are vulnerable to diseases, with causes mostly because of improper nutrition. Due to technology, the world is left suffering. We may not notice but our continuous act of ignoring nature is killing us little by little.
Eating the right amount and kinds of food everyday is a tremendous contribution of nutrition to prevention of diseases. Inadequate calorie intake has been demonstrated to bring about an impairment of physical efficiency, low production output and poor muscle strength and endurance. Vitamin deficiency affects physical fitness and well-being. Protein deficiency results to muscular weakness, fatigue and overall work performance.
We are challenged not to be bound by the modern world. All the products of science and technology will mean nothing if we die at 20 or 30. It will not give us the nutrition that we need to avoid H1N1 and kill every virus, disease, and infection in the world. It will just catch our attention, pull us to its deepest attraction, and we’re done, we’re gone. We’ll be dust and ashes in the split of time, in the blink of an eye.
Proper nutrition is the very thing we need now. Our existence will mean a lot as well as our goals if we can utilize this. If only we can set aside every earthly distraction and pay close attention to health and life, then every man can wake up each day facing the new hope of the golden sun and providing the wellspring of progress in the world.

How might we plot our escape from the nutritionist and, in turn, from the most harmful effects of the Western diet? To Denis Burkitt, the English doctor stationed in Africa during World War II who gave the Western diseases their name, the answer seemed straightforward, if daunting. “The only way we’re going to reduce disease,” he said, “is to go backwards on diet and lifestyle of our ancestors.”” (423) Which sums up fairly well that this point is that the problem is more about our current social structure when it comes to food. “For most people for most of history, gathering and preparing food has been an occupation at the very heart of daily life.”…

“In Defense of Food” is a book written by Michael Pollan which was released in 2008. Pollan writes about the “Western Diet” and the dangers associated with it. He proposes a new answer to what we should and should not eat. He states that it comes down to seven simple words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. Those are the words that he opens the book with, this is his basic recommendation. He states that the rest of the book is just a detailed elaboration of those words. The first half of the book is all about criticizing and deconstructing the “health disaster”, as Pollan calls it, of the “western diet”, as well as the philosophy of nurtitionism that surrounds it. The second half of the book focuses on solutions to this disaster and Pollan’s thoughts on the matter.…

In the book, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, author Michael Pollan commences his tale with a few straightforward words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants”. In his introduction, An Eater’s Manifesto, Pollan discusses how the dietetic wisdom that was passed down from older generations has been heavily tainted by “nutritional science and food industry marketing” (Pollan, 2008). The first volume of the book entitled, The Age of Nutritionism”, delves into this problem and helps uncover the cause of today’s “nutritional confusion and anxiety” (Pollan, 2008). Nowadays, it is not uncommon to have “edible foodlike substances” displayed in every aisle of the grocery store with all products promoting some kind of nutritional benefit from their consumption. These dietary facts are often modified to showcase dietary benefits that are barely present in the food product, if present at all. With such prevalent misinformation, today’s society has become so overly concerned with nutrient enriched food that people have either forgotten or are unaware of the importance of the fundamentals. Pollan further explains that humanity has become “a nation of orthorexics” meaning that people have developed “an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating” centred on the theory of nutritionism (Pollan, 2008). Chronic diseases that have the highest death rate such as obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer, can be attributed to the “Western diet” which consists of “highly processed foods and refined grains; the use of chemicals to raise plants and animals in huge monocultures; the superabundance of cheap calories of sugar and fat produced by modern agriculture; and the narrowing of the biological diversity of the human diet to a tiny handful of staple crops, notably wheat, corn, and soy” (Pollan, 2008). In the second volume entitled “The Western Diet and the diseases of Civilization”, Pollan analyzes the…

Maxfield is a graduate student from Fontboone University who claims that the food industries, as well as prominent health journalists, are part of the growing health anxiety in our country. Her essay is a response to Michael Pollan, a well-known health journalist and is a name that Maxfield refers to a lot in her article. She suggests that Pollan is contributing to our cultural anxiety over food by using “eating algorithms” in which he backs up by his negative claims over American health. Instead of using a diet plan, or strict rules on food, Maxfield insists Americans should learn to trust their bodies, and they will meet their personal health needs, no more, no less.…

When Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma was published, many readers began questioning him for advice on what they should eat in order to stay healthy. In his more recent book, In Defense of Food, he responds with three rules, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants"(Pollan 1). This seven word response seems too simple for a relatively complicated question, but as he further elaborates these rules into specific guidelines, this summary turns out to be surprisingly complete. Using inductive and deductive reasoning, he debunks the ideas behind nutritionism and food science, and proves that the western diet is the cause for food related diseases. Inductive reasoning is when a general conclusion is drawn based off observations, and deductive reasoning is when specific conclusion is drawn based on general concepts (Griffith 269-270). In Michael Pollan's book, In Defense of Food, his reasoning is sound because he makes strong inductive and deductive arguments which are supported by studies and research from credible sources.…

In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he informs Americans about the western diet and believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 434). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionism, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads. In turn he provides his own rules for escaping the western diet as well as the idea of nutritionism set forth by scientists.…
