Introductory Paragraph: The Wheeler Community Center is a great place that parents can take their children during the day of send them after school. This center will promote physical exercise, cognitive and socio-emotional development, from ages ranging from infant to adolescence. The Wheeler center will also give information and classes on physical and mental health, parenting and educational classes. The Wheeler center is devoted to the families in and around the community they serve. In my expert opinion the Wheeler Center creating each room for a specific age group will help in the all-around …show more content…
health of the children and families who attend. There will be a membership fee of 40 dollars for adults and 20 for children. Each member will have the ability to use all rooms and equipment.
1. Age Group #1 - Infants
Paragraph 1. First activity Mommy and Me Music/Dance class.
The theory of the Mommy and Me Music/Dance class is to create a safe space that parents can spend time with their child and interact with other children in that age group. It also is an early start on showing their infant how to play and develop friendships.
Mommy and me dance classes is a great activity to do with your infant child. It encourages physical activity. It also helps with enhancing the relationship between the infant and the caregiver, cognitive and psychosocial development. In this class the parents will sing songs that associate everyday objects in a musical manner (dog goes woof and cat goes meow). Singing these songs with the infants encourages cognitive development.
One health and well- being issue that teachers or instructors may run into is making sure that dance activities aren’t too strenuous and don’t hurt the infant, also to make sure the parents aren’t shacking the infant.
Paragraph 2. Second activity Infant Organic Painting
The theory behind Infant Organic Painting is to create a place that parents can spend time with their infant. It also helps the infant with cognitive skills, change in their thinking. In this class the infant will paint with food, pureed veggies, peas, carrots, strawberries, etc. The different colors of the food will be used as the colors to paint. The infant will put it in their mouth, and associate the color with a taste learning what they like and dislike and the parents get a great picture.
This class promotes physical health and cognitive development.
The fruits and vegetables used as the paint helps with early healthy eating patterns. Learning to eat healthy at an early age will determine the infant’s relationship with food later. The organic painting class also helps with psychosocial development, socialization skills.
One health or well-being issue that teachers or instructors may have with this class is allergies the children might suffer from. Most places don’t allow any peanut products but children can suffer from many different food allergies. If one or more students are allergic to the fruits and veggies being used the class may be harder to instruct.
Paragraph 3.One specific item that the children would need is construction paper.
If the center provides the food for the children to use in each class, they will need help with other supplies like construction paper for them to make their art. http://www.officedepot.com/?cm_mmc=MSN-_-B_Marketing_B-_-Marketing_Catalog-_-Office%20Depot%20Catalogue_29567008-VQ16-c 2. Age Group #2 – Toddlers
Paragraph 1. First Activity Soft Touch …show more content…
Classes
The theory behind the soft touch class is that toddlers are able to run, jump and interact with everything in the class. The class will be made up of all soft objects, nothing in the class can cause harm. This is important because toddlers are learning to crawl, walk and run. The class will have many different colors, the colors will be associated with things in everyday life that are soft (chicks are yellow, bears are brown).
This class will enhance physical activity and cognitive and psychosocial development. The kids will be able to crawl, walk and run encouraging physical activity. Also learning the difference between hard and soft and the animals that are soft enhances cognitive development. Allowing the toddler to roam the room freely without parents at their side promotes psychosocial development “A healthy emotional relationship also allows children to explore their physical environment more freely and to take protected risks.”(Mossler,2015)
At least one issue that this class might have is that there isn’t any direct health or well- being activities. It is just a place that a parent can take their child to interact with other children and give them an hour or two too run around.
Paragraph 2. Second Activity Story Book Time
The theory behind the story time class for toddlers is to start getting your child ready for head start. There will be a book read every class, the book would be about something that goes on every day at home. For example bedtime, becoming a big boy or girl, I’m going to be a big brother or sister. After the book is read there will be a craft for them to complete like coloring a picture or face painting.
This class does not have any physical activity, however it does have cognitive and psychosocial development. The toddles will learn how to interact with other children. It will also allow them to make connections from the books to real life. It can also be a place a parent can take their child to allow them to have a greater understanding of a situation like “mommies having a baby”. This class will affect how they think and give a greater understanding of their emotions.
One issue that this class might face is the parenting, not all parents might agree on the book that a being read and might not want their child exposed to certain situations. This class also doesn’t give any physical activity.
Paragraph 3.One item that the center will need are books.
In order to have a great story time the center would need a wide verity of books to read to the class. http://dollardays.com/wholesale-childrens-books.html 3. Age Group #3 – Early Childhood
Paragraph 1. First Activity Jump Around
The theory of this class is that the there would be a ball pit and the floor would be made with soft padding and springs in the floor. This would allow the kids to run around jump and play. The springs in the floor would allow them to bounce and jump at any point in the room. In the 3-6 age range the children just want to run and play with other children.
Being able to run and play will enhance physical and psychosocial development. Running and playing for an hour is great exercise. Being able to interact with other children, learning to get along helps their psychosocial development.
One issue that this class may face is that there isn’t any cognitive development.
It doesn’t change the way they think or encourage although it does encourage problem solving on a minimum basis.
Paragraph 2. Second Activity Water Works
The theory is that the children would play in the water. There would be different water stations that will allow them to different thing. One station will make bubbles, one station they could make sand castles etc. If the child is younger they could play with the more subtle stations. For the older children we would introduce science into the equation, how water effects things in the world.
These activities enhance cognitive and psychosocial development. The activities explore problem solving and thinking process. It also allows kid to interact with other children and gain social skills. It is also fun for young children. Most kids like to play in the water and this class can be held all year around.
The issue this class faces is that there is no physical activity. It doesn’t touch on any parenting, health or well-being of the child and their families.
Paragraph 3.In order for the children to jump on the floor we would need spring
floors.
The Wheeler Center could provide all the other things needed for this room, like the balls for the ball pit. However we would need further assistance to make the whole floor in that room spring flooring. http://www.theamericangym.com/Floorinfo.htm 4. Age Group #4 – Middle/Late Childhood
Paragraph 1. First Activity Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is a fun activity for young children. It is also great for physical activity. This class would have an instructor that teaches the children safety and how to properly climb.
This activity enhances physical and psychosocial development. It also helps with cognitive development and problem solving. It allows children to work together and learn how to be socialize. It also helps them solve problems, how to get to the top the fastest way. It also changes the way they think about safety and climbing.
An issue this class could have is well-being, children could fall and hurt themselves. This would create serious problems for the center.
Paragraph 2. Second Activity Guitar Class
The theory is that the kids would come and learn how to play the guitar. Learning how to play an instrument is fun and interesting to children. The children would learn a song each month and have a show at the end of the month. This will open their minds to other instruments they may be interested in and make it easier to earn other subjects.
The activity enhances cognitive and psychosocial development. It helps with the cognitive skills and intelligence. It also helps with psychosocial development it promotes social interaction. Music is also a great way to express emotion.
One issue is that is isn’t a physical activity
Paragraph 3.The one item needed for this age group are guitars on a massive level.
The children can’t learn to play guitar if they don’t have a guitar to practice on. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/musical-instruments/guitars-basses/pcmcat151600050002.c?id=pcmcat151600050002 5. Age Group #5 – Adolescence
Paragraph 1. First Activity Swimming Lessons
The theory is that there would be an instructor to teach children how to swim. Children would learn to work together, and it is a great physical activity. They would learn team work, life skills and water safety.
Swimming is an activity that enhances physical, cognitive, and/or socioemotional development. The child would learn problem solving skills, social skills and get a great physical development.
One issue would be making sure there is a person there to supervise that is CPR certified.
Paragraph 2. Second Activity Water Aerobics
The theory would be that the children/adults would learn exercise while in the water, to promote physical health. Water Aerobics is a safe way for the kids to interact and get physical exercise.
Water Aerobics is an activity that enhances physical, cognitive, and/or socioemotional development. It can help with social skills, problem solving and can change the way they think about bigger bodies of water.
One issue would be that there may not be enough children to have the class.
Paragraph 3.Floaties are one item we would need for this age group.
Multiple children learning how to swim requires a safety net, floaters provide that. http://www.target.com/s/swim+floats+swimways?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=msn&CPNG=kids_kids+shorts&adgroup=swim_float&LNM=baby%20pool%20floats&MT=broad&LID=12p7015846&KID=c131b3e2-3102-4964-8cdf-a1f8b51f4b19 Conclusion: The Wheeler Center is a great place to take your child to spend time and have activities that help with physical, cognitive and psychosocial development. Each of these room would help with all age range. The Wheeler Center thanks the city council for their consideration on trying to make the community we live in a better place for the children and their families. “Differences in children 's cognitive outcomes start very early, which has important implications for the intergenerational transmission of poverty and inequality. Programs that seek to increase early stimulation for disadvantaged children, perhaps through parenting programs or high-quality center-based care, hold promise.”(Schady,2011)
