Personal Narrative: My Work Day At Old Navy
I worked three hours on Sunday 8/23/2015 at Old Navy as a cashier. Cashiering is quickly becoming one of my favorite jobs. Before I was sent to register 3, I had to go through some ethics training about Old Navy's zero harassment policy. I have had to do similar training for another job I had so this was nothing new. At the register, I faced some normal challenges a cashier faces on a average day from the computer running slow to the credit card reader not working. During this work day, I was given a new challenge and responsibility of wearing a walkie talkie earpiece. I have never used one before and it was pretty exciting to learn this new skill. With this machine, I can hear the mangers and other select employees that have a walkie. I had

In the context of a retail cashier, this would require the systematic repetition of their primary job to scan products and retrieve payments (Gabbur et al. 2011); the woman’s failure to provide payment and then subsequent arguing was clearly a disruption to the cashier’s technical performance. However, in real life, the cashier did not reorient his performance to meet his technical objective; he did not demand that she leave or call for security to escort her out of the building. I would argue that this is because the importance of Macy’s culture, which is to be polite, respectful and courteous, is more important than its technical objective of scanning customers in line at a rapid pace. To understand the reason, Goffman (1959:283) asks us to consider the implications of a “performance disruption,” or a social interaction in which the existing communication comes “to an embarrassed and confused halt.” While this certainly happened to the cashier from a technical perspective as he was forced to halt his rapid succession of scanning products and hekping new customers in life, the negative implications were minor; the company simply lost about 5 minutes of employee productivity. However, the implications of a performance disruption to the company’s culture could be far more severe. If compelled to leave the…

Despite non-selection, my pursuit of this prestigious and challenging position will not be deterred. My naval career, I have continually sought positions of greater responsibility and produced exceptional results in each of those positions. While I take great pride in being a Chief Petty Officer, I feel the experience I have acquired as a Chief will benefit any wardroom I am a member of. It is important to note that I did not submit an LDO-CWO package for FY-14 due to the time constraints I experienced while standing up Naval Beach Unit SEVEN with an under staffed office and operational commitment.…

I remember anxiously waiting for 9:00 o’clock so we could go explore the store. The grocery store could be kind of spooky during the night but this didn’t bother us too much because we would be busy playing tag or hide and seek throughout the store. The grocery store has seven aisles. Aisles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are nothing special but aisle 6 is divided into in half by a variety of items as well as a candy box ( I don’t know what else to call it).…

It was a Thursday morning in November. I woke up, got dressed and got ready to take a taxi to 42nd Street in Manhattan with my mother. I was so upset that I had to leave to upstate somewhere I had never been and the thought of living there? Lord knows I wanted to throw up so badly. When I got to 42nd Street I saw the guy that I had an interview with. He said, “Hello Nikki. Are you excited to go to Job Corps?” I lie and said yes. When it was time to leave I said goodbye to my mother and got on the bus.…

Growing up I had two loving parents, they always wanted the best possible for me. School was always challenging for me. I never liked it, and I never had a good work ethic. It started when I was young, my parents never made me do chores, and they always rewarded me for minimal efforts of work, and it did not help me in the long run. I had a very easy life growing up, but being spoiled does not help when you become an adult. It’s very hard to just gain a work ethic, it takes a lot of time and effort.…
