Personal Statement: A Career Analysis

A painful soccer incident at the age of 13 exposed me to the world of medicine. It showed me unknown machines, procedures and practices that formed the foundation of the hospital. After I was admitted into the ER with a fractured skull, I became fascinated by the intriguing skills that the personnel performed. The duties reminded me of the very thing that got me into the situation, soccer. Every move was done with the utmost precision and accuracy. The staples were placed into my head with such carefulness, the bandages were wrapped just the right amount, not to tight and not too loose. I experienced a dual feeling, one of familiarity and one of unusualness. I was used to the meticulousness but I was unaccustomed to the talk of the professionals. At 13 years old, I was profoundly captivated by medicine but I felt impotent because of my age.
I am still incessantly obsessed with becoming a physician. But, unlike before, I’m finally able to take certain steps toward achieving my goal. I began volunteering at NYP-Weill Cornell Hospital over the summer and it helped me fill in some of the blanks that I previously had. One of the biggest advantages was the opportunity to talk with doctors of all specialities, nurses, aides and especially patients. It helped me see the world of the hospital from a variety of viewpoints. In addition to the patients, I was able to learn the different equipment and tools of the trade. As a student, just about anything caught my attention. Everything made me want to learn more. It made me want to inspect, investigate and become involved. The road that I have to take to wear the white coat won’t be easy and won’t be short. The first steps begin at Bronx Science and hopefully continue at Cornell University. Classes like Freud and the Invention of Psychoanalysis are the stepping-stones that will show me the complexity of the human body and mind and I can’t wait to dig
