Honor Society
Personal statement essay
I have always wanted to be a part of the community and give back to it. With the chance to be in honor society, I got an extra push for that chance. I took my first steps into giving back with my parents right behind me. A little over a month ago, I went to go volunteer at a food place in downtown seattle, called Food Lifeline. While I was there, I learned a few things. First, the global food crisis isn't that there is a shortage of food. Its that there is too much food in places and not enough in others. Second, Food Lifeline helps to distribute the food.that there is out there. Third it's not that hard to give back to the community, all it takes is a little push. From then to now,
I have volunteered at a handful of places. All of these sites were very welcoming and the people helped me be a part of something. I realize now, that community service made me a better person and changed my perspective. It also strengthened my citizenship. My citizenship before I started volunteering didn't really matter to me. I thought citizenship was just if you were a citizen of the united states. I thought it meant that I had to either be born in in the us or live here for a certain amount of years. Now, I realize it's about being a part of something and connecting with others. As I grew, I realized that not everyone lives a life like I do. Not everyone has a clean set of clothes everyday or has TV to watch everyday. Not everyone has food on the table everyday, every single meal. There are many people out there who could use a helping hand. I want to be able to help them. I want to be able to know that I can make a difference, a good one. To be a part of a community and to have good citizenship are both very important to me and should be for everyone. Community service helps develop citizenship by bringing people together to do their part in the community. It also helps people step up to their civic duties.
