Personal Statement: Summer Abroad Program
To exchange one summer to another country during university life has always been my dream. No matter of hearing the exciting summer abroad stories from the people that went, or seeing the amazing travelling pictures they took, all of these have made me determine to join the adventure. This summer abroad program is definitely one of the best things an adventurer could ask for, I would love to go and discover the world.
I chose Italy as my destination, not only because it’s a beautiful country to go, but also because the courses it offers fulfill some of my program requirements. As a commerce student, I am mainly looking for management courses, and Italy has RSM 395(international marketing), which I believe I am a perfect candidate for this course. I have taken an introduction course to marketing, and I did well in the course as I achieved a final GPA of 3.7. I am also taking courses including marketing management and intro to international business this semester. I believe that by the time I take the course in Italy, I will have prepared myself good enough to have a better understanding towards the course material.
Our world continues to become more globalized, companies in all countries continue to invest in international market. I am encouraged to pay attention to everyday world news, because the world is now connected tightly, we are all tied closely with each other. With a month of studying in Italy, there is no doubt that my world view will be expanded a lot more, and the knowledge I gain outside of Canada will further my career path.
To study abroad will definitely become a precious add-on to my life experience. I am expecting to come back home with new perspectives about myself, and a broader view of the world. After I return to campus, I will exchange the traits that I will be gained through summer abroad with the people here.
When I first time came to Canada, I barely spoke any English. It was very difficult for me to understand the class and

This experience taught me numerous new things that shaped who I was and altered the way I returned to my community, Los Angeles. The most important thing I learned at this internship was the ability to “fit into” this new way of life. While studying abroad, I believe that this skill I gained from my internship will allow me accommodate and adapt easily to the new culture. I also learned from this internship how to properly communicate with new people in general, but also with people who may not be familiar with my own culture and lifestyle. This new skill will also allow me to communicate and connect with other students while abroad by expressing an interest in who they are. I will also be able to grow a connection with my peers by showing them a bit of my culture and help them learn a new way of life.…

The purpose of college is not only to prepare yourself for a career after college but to discover what you are truly passionate about. As a freshmen student, I find it difficult to find something within the field of engineering that I want to make a career out of. Unfortunately, the limitations of fulfilling a required core curriculum and being overlooked by companies for an internship makes it hard for freshmen to test the waters and plan an academic and professional future. I feel studying abroad is one way in which I can learn about the different paths engineering can lead to, all while broadening my cultural horizons. I am particularly interested in this course because Italy and nuclear engineering are two things that I would like to explore.…

In the course Study Abroad: Learning Through Engagement, I was required to write a reentry report depicting how studying abroad changed me and my perspective on the world. In my report I made the claim that, “Studying abroad is an integral part of higher education.” According to Wayne C. Booth (et al) this claim, though vague, is a practical claim because it first addresses a problem, “caused by some condition in the world,” it contains an ‘undesirable consequence’, of that condition, and to avoid this problem, a call to action for my readers (53-54).…
