In each state there are certain laws that monitor the purchasing of guns. In New York State it is illegal to obtain most assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines. To purchase a handgun in New York State you need to carry a license to ensure that you had a background check. When you purchase a handgun you must have all owned handguns specified in your license. You also need a license to purchase ammunition along with a background check. There are many court cases that have dealt with the problem of firearms. In 2008 there was District of Columbia v. Heller. The District of Columbia passed a legislation to ensure that all legal firearms are kept unloaded and disassembled or trigger locked. A group of gun owners had a suit claiming that these laws were a violation of their Second Amendment. The United Stated court agreed and that making these laws is a violation of the Second Amendment.
