Because really the only way to ensure a truly fair society, a truly fair workplace and environment is to have the merit and ability of candidates as the highest contributing factor in regards to their selection for a certain position. It seems only just that those who perform the best, those that are putting in the effort, should be rewarded accordingly.
Now excuse the bad analogy, but we cannot kill fire with fire. A system in which such minority groups are being labelled as minorities, as people who require help and aid, as those who cannot look after themselves, is quite counterproductive. I mean since when have we held discrimination in such a positive light. We will come no closer to achieving the colour blind society that was Martin-Luther King’s dream if we continue to favour a race and gender conscious scheme.
Such schemes are not even achieving their designated outcomes. A study by Hoover international found that positive discrimination tends to benefit the middle and upper-class minorities rather than those who truly require aid.
Now if there is no correlation between one skin colour or gender and their intelligence then I see no reason that positive discrimination schemes should be upheld. Positive discrimination is meant to redress discrimination but it in many ways it is only enhancing such.
The achievements of those in minority groups can become compromised. It is impossible to know if one deserved admission of they succeeded simply to fulfil some sort of diversity matrix.
