The main argument for pro animal testing is the myth that animals do not feel pain. However, …show more content…
Animal experimentation has not always been successful and in fact has and always holds the possibility that it will be harmful to humans. Although, animals and humans have similar genetic make up, they’re not exact. It’s impossible to expect that a rat will react to a drug the same way a person. For example, during the early 1920s studies done on monkey for the polio vaccine ended up delaying the fight against it. The experiments on the monkey indicated that polio mainly affected and began in the nervous system. However, researchers later found that gastrointestinal system was the most affected part of the human anatomy. The data showed false information because the monkey were injected with the viral strains through the nose which inevitably favored the brain tissue. This was seen again later in 1960s when scientists experimented on animals to determine if tobacco caused lung cancer and the animals reacted to it differently than humans. The experiment concluded that tobacco does not cause lung cancer, this was because the tar from the smoke did not case a tumor to develop on rodents. Due to the false data, tobacco companied were able to use these statistics as facts and delayed the government warning to the public about the side effects of smoking. Many animals such as rats synthesize 100 times more than the recommended amounts of vitamin C which is believed to prevent
