ESPN states that Todd Fedoruk was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a fight with Colton Orr during a game between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers. The fight, which took place just 21 seconds into the game, ended when Orr “landed a hard, overhand right.” on Fedoruk who immediately fell backward, unconscious. Philadelphia’s team doctors immediately ran onto the ice to help Fedoruk who earlier this season missed eighteen games after “major facial surgery” from another fight (Philadelphia). Injuries like this have made many people take a deeper look into fighting. Players are getting bigger and stronger, which has resulted in an increase in the number of injuries during the 2007 NHL season. Fighting is also giving hockey a bad image to some, which is turning away potential sponsors and fans. However, fighting in hockey has tolerated since day one. It is also an aspect to the game that draws many people to the game and can also be used as a strategical move to shift momentum and to help star players do their jobs. The players also have unwritten rules they follow to keep fighting from getting out of hand and many believe that fighting prevents dirty plays and cheap shots by keeping players in check. Fighting has always been a part of hockey and should never be taken out.…
Shoulder fake left, head fake right, a sweet inside outside move, and he fires it in top shelf, beating the goalie glove side to win the game. While that may sound like a narrative of a game-winning hockey goal, in reality, it is 1:30 AM on your average Thursday night and I am struggling to find the perfect concluding sentence to finish my history term paper. Often when I am struggling to find an answer to a question or need to concentrate on any given topic, I reach for my worn-out Warrior hockey stick and my dusty orange ball and begin to stickhandle mindlessly. One might never know, that my mind is far away from hockey as I look like a complete fool deking (hockey term for getting past people) imaginary people on my way to an imaginary net.…
Lacrosse Vs. Hockey has always been an age old discussion. Well, here is where it's going to be debunked. The sports do have some things in common. With both of their fast paced play it is hard to tell them apart. Along with that, their physical play they can both be loved by people with a passion for thrills. Hockey is better and more enjoyable than lacrosse for the following reasons.…
The game of hockey originated in Canada as far back as 1875, and has become one of the worlds most popular sports. The sport is primarily played on ice and involves players using sticks to project a puck into the opposing teams goal net. Typically being more popular in the north due to cold weather, hockey is actually popular all over the world and is loved by millions of people. Being a fantastic and entertaining game, hockey unfortunately holds a reputation of being a violent sport and can be broken down into three categories: The fans, the players, and the nature of the game.…
Do you ever wonder to yourself why some sports, like softball, aren’t in the Olympics? Well, the reason why softball isn’t in the Olympics is because of the fact if it was, the Olympics would be too big and they think the U.S is too good at it... Personally, I think that softball should be in the Olympics because women sports should be more recognized. The reasons softball should be in the Olympics are, girls like me dream about it, the US is good at it, and it helps women live out their dreams and help their futures.…
It has to take incredible courage to process a challenge like losing a limb in war. Stories abound from young men and women who stepped on a mine, or were ambushed, and their vehicle blown-up. For some, the moment is frozen in time and they cannot shed it. For others, they don't remember anything before waking up in the hospital without all their parts. To take in that realization, and then go on to perform as a star athlete is to this author, unimaginable. The incredible strength and perseverance to go on with life and then for some, to further demonstrate their zeal for life in their high level of participation in sports, is mind blowing.…
John Wooden (NCAAB Hall of Fame coach) said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” High school sports are usually beneficial to all parties involved, such as the athletes, parents and the schools that have the athletic programs. The athletes that play high school sports learn countless lessons on life, how to be healthy with exercise, and the extra incentive to keep up the grade to play these sports. Parents of high school athlete’s get an opportunity to watch their child succeed at something he or she loves. Parents can also benefit financially, when their child is good enough at a sport to get offered a scholarship which may pay for all of college. For a high school that has athletic programs the biggest pro is the amount of money to be made from things such as admissions, concessions stand sells, t-shirts…
90 minutes to make or break your season. The grass under your cleats when arriving at the pitch. Wind blowing through jerseys while sprinting to get the ball. The silky feel of your school colors on your sweaty skin. The thrill achieved by that one perfect kick straight into the feet of the waiting teammate right next to the goalie's box. The skill and precision that goes into one sport that the world goes crazy for. Imagine dribbling across the length of the pitch and passing the ball, waiting for that pass back to complete the two-touch the team has been practicing endlessly. The ball is coming straight at you at break-neck speed. It’s too high to stop with your feet, what do you do? You breathe, take a look at your coach who is chewing ferociously…
Growing up I played baseball to me baseball was everything i could think of. i couldn't wait to the weekend so i could put on that dirty uniform and pick up the new bat and nice leather glove and play baseball. When i was young i played in a big park in NYC where everyone saw you play so as i grew up everyone expected me to continue playing baseball and get better and work hard my mother always signed me up for baseball and i met a lot of coaches who help me gain more talent throughout the years. So as i grew up baseball started to be more and more of a priority to me i went to baseball practice two times a week one during the week and one on the weekend and with baseball practice i attended a baseball program which is twice a week meaning less and less time for homework and time to study. that being said i believe that time management and dealing with less and less sleep is the biggest problem with high school sports.…
Lots of people think that competitive sports aren’t good for kids but other people think that competitive sports are good for kids. I take the position that competitive sports are good for kids because it helps kids build self esteem, second it teaches them how to work with a group, and the third and most important reason is that it helps them live a healthy lifestyle.…
A place I go that I feel a complete sense of ease and belonging is Bridgewater Sports Arena, where I play ice hockey. I love the sound that my Bauer Supreme skates make when they slice and dice through the thick, frigid ice. I crave the pattering sound that the spectators hands make when you score a goal or make a great play. And I despise the collective, “ awe,” the fans make when something doesn’t go your way. The smell of the stick wax and gatorade let me know that I am right at home where I should be on a Saturday and Sunday night. The sound of the zippers on our bags opening up, and soft click of the equipment when it stretches and gets strapped down to the velcro excites me. We listen to our goalies interesting taste in pop, rap, and reggae music blaring through the locker room despite usually being quite unpleasant, it…
When I was young, six or seven years of age, my mother gave me my first hockey stick(s), a pair of Fisher-Price goalie sticks. I used these to play street hockey with the older local neighbor kids in the cul-de-sac, where my buddy Eddy and I were the goalies. This was the spark of my interest in hockey, but I did not play it competitively on the ice for a few more years. In the third grade where I was already active in baseball, soccer, and basketball, I decided to learn to skate on ice and joined my friend Eddy’s in-house hockey team. Immediately it became my sport of choice, and picking it up seemed to come easy, too. I worked hard and played in the less competitive in-house level for three years when I decided…
Start at an early age- I started at a young age, and I turned out great. It brings experience to make you like the sport, and you do not want to start at age ten, because there is people who have started way before you and they will most likely be better than you. So if you start early, you will get a head start on the sport that you want to play. It also makes you figure out what happens when you get to the next level, instead of being brought into a high intensity level where you won’t play much, but if you did start early, then you would be better at that level.…
Hockey is by far my favorite sport of all time. I love the environment, and all the technique involved in the sport. Everything from slap shot, to wrist shots, to fighting, to passing, and even fighting for the puck on the boards has always brought my attention.…
A great fraction of people on the planet play a sport. Most people prefer to play a team sport to satisfy their needs and for many social reasons. However, although running is not a team sport, it is the best sport out there. Running is the best sport ever because it’s a way to keep your body in shape, it gives you a great rush after you’re finished and because it improves your health.…
