Monopolizing (Wood, 2013) is when you have continuously focusing on ourselves instead of listening to the person that is talking to us. I have a boss at work that is always using this method, He will come over and ask you what you are working on. You can give a simple answer like, “I am working on this website”. He will turn this around to how busy he is and has so much work to get done and not enough time. There are other forms of listening that come out during arguments like; Defensive listening (Wood, 2013) and Ambushing listening (Wood, 2013) but I think that selective listening (Wood, 2013) is the one that I personal use the most. When I get upset I find myself only thinking of ways that I can use what is being said by the other person against them. I am listening to what the other person is saying but I am only listening to use their own words against them. I think that I do this because I am afraid that if I give the other person the opportunity to beat me in the argument.
