By: Brenna Dickerson Throughout my high school years I have been lucky to experience some of the best teachers here at Indian Land High School. Through these experiences I have been inspired to join the Teacher Cadet Program. I have always enjoyed the company of children. I am currently employed at FunkyTown Parties where the majority of parties are for children who are under the age of fifteen. During the summer months while I am not in school I help host summer camps for children whose parents are employed. These are the months where I find my job the most enjoyable! My mother has been a teacher my entire life. To be exact she has been a teacher for nineteen years. Listening to her stories about teaching her kids throughout the years have been some of the best stories she has ever told me. Stories from how her best students have gone on to follow in her footsteps and become teachers as well as pro basketball players, musicians, and major business leaders, and one went on to become the current student body president at UNC Chapel Hill. Others include inspirational stories of how students with no parental guidance have gone on to become their own success with the needed push from a certain teacher. These stories have driven me to want to make a difference in this world. Wanting to help children has always been a priority of mine. I myself have a learning disability called Irlens and I understand the struggles of going through school with a greater disadvantage than the average student. Through this I have sympathy towards those students who go through the school day thinking that they are alone. They feel like they are dumb, and that they will never make it through school because of these problems that they live through every day. While I have learned ways to cope with my disability I still feel the need to help those who feel helpless. The final reason for wanting to join the Teacher Cadet Program is to experience something new. I want to be able to enhance my leadership skills along with building my confidence in other areas such as public speaking, and the want to help others learn and succeed. Through the Teacher Cadet Program I expect to learn important life skills that I will carry along with me for the rest of my professional and personal life. Although it will not come easy, I always accept a challenge head on. I am an extremely hard worker with the ability to do whatever is asked of me, and with these skills I think I would be a perfect candidate for the Teacher Cadet Program.
