Reflection On My Writing Style
I feel that the information I gathered across multiple assessments gave consistent results. They showed me that L. has a great writer’s foundation and is likely capable of digging deeper into the writing process than she currently has the opportunity to do in her classroom. Her Garfield survey, showing her in the 84% percentile for writing attitude paired with her personal interview, where she vocalized that she loves writing should indicate that if her love of writing were being attended to that she would have at least one or two finished writing pieces from the year that she could speak of. In addition the detailed assessments, my anecdotal notes showed that L. is a focused worker who I think could find her way through some self-editing and peer-editing, even if the classroom schedule and lessons could change to allow her to have an increased opportunity for writing instruction. …show more content…
Initially I thought that my student would be very strong in one or two areas but I actually found that she is mostly at the meaning maker stage on the writer continuum and that Word Choice was the only area that fell slightly below this. For me, reading the continuum pulls the traits into one umbrella of writing. The three-level writing guide did the same thing for me. L. is a 3/4 writer and reading through the ½ traits really helped me to see exactly how much writing progress and development she has made at this point in her writing experience.
I was surprised, in the Garfield survey, to see how much L. would not like to write for science or social studies. She also wouldn’t want to have a job for a newspaper or feel like she had to write to change someone’s opinion. From what I can assume, anything that seemed challenging was something that decidedly lowered her enthusiasm for writing. This makes me wonder if other kids would respond similarly or if she is unique in being discouraged by these

One thing that has helped me grow as a writer this year was the use of freewriting. I had never heard of this technique before this class but I’m sure glad I finally learned about it. Freewriting helps so much in allowing me to get my ideas out of my head and down on the paper. In addition, it solved my problem of sitting at my computer with a blank word document open not knowing what to write. I now have a general idea beforehand, and am able…

Part of Rabel’s classroom literacy instruction was also focused on him writing either the days routine in the morning or after a lesson. I was able to observe several things about Rabel as a writer. I noticed that Rabel enjoys to wre, but once again has a hard time staying on task. Rabel is very intelligent and can write about almost anything. When they were learning how to write poems, I observed him create a poem about the day he went to the zoo. Rabel is a very interesting young boy that when is focused, he can complete any task assigned to him. I also noticed that his personality comes out in his writing. While Rabel was writing I noticed that he wasn’t scared to use words he didn’t know. His teacher encouraged her students to try their…

When I read the title to this essay, my immediate thoughts, I love to read, but hate the writing, that should be on the writing. I was one of those students who still had and still have the dislike of writing to reading. Holt's article has confirmed my conviction that this hatred is due to the ever-looming possibility of failure. As I continued to read, in each section I could identify with Holt's arguments, this was a teacher who clearly explored the student's point of view. I understood Holt's thought process that learning is more effective when giving a child the freedom to learn in a way that works for him, and when you remove the uncertainty of failure, you add the will to try and the courage be creative.…

Personally, I’ve always felt I was a decent writer in all aspects regarding research and personal narratives. Considering those are subjects that interest me and that I love to read about. I struggle the most when it comes to making my writing hold a deeper or hidden message when the topics I am told to write about don’t interest me. Having to do rhetorical analysis with old literature and having to explain the main idea was my number one struggle in AP language and composition senior year. But other than that I felt, throughout high school, I enjoyed writing and taking a majority of the writing classes my school had to offer, not only because it was required but because it was something that teachers and myself felt I did acceptable work.…

In school, we have been required to write many papers on many different subjects, some being timed and others not. Writing has never been something that has come easy to me, especially when put on the spot and told to write a paper in a certain amount of hours. When I write, I like to have time to think and plan my essay. Being able to revise and edit the paper makes it even better than it was before. When I am given the time to plan my essay, the writing has more depth than when I am put on the spot and have no time to think about what will go into my paper.…

I feel the material I have learned in this course has qualified me to have met the WST requirement. When I initially started this course I felt like my writing was about average, not weak, not strong. My ideas about writing were relatively simplified, and my understanding of different writing styles and concepts were quite general. However, throughout each assignment within this course, I felt my writing skill and understanding become significantly stronger.…

They can compare what student understands from the different phases and what to teach so that the student can improve and understand writing as they transition to the next phase of the continuum. Brandon would be considered to be a student in the early writing phase as he understands punctuation and knows that writing is a way to communication and to remember things for later. However, he understands sentence structure but shows he doesn’t use varied structure to begin sentences, at least it the same prompts. My suggestion is that Brandon work with sentence frames to see just how different sentences can vary. This will also lead to him seeing that sentences are all part of a paragraph.…

Writing in journals for class or writing stories for entertainment proved to be great fun. The writing level of elementary and middle school was easy to learn and work with. Arriving in high school, I felt confident in my writing skills. High school level writing proved to be more challenging. After English I, I felt unprepared for the rest of my high school writing experience. I grew to become uninterested in writing for the next two years. I procrastinated finishing any writing assignment I was given. Though I received decent grades on my assignments, I could have received better grades had I not procrastinated writing my assignments. My attitude toward writing has changed from disinterested to excited with my Composition I and II classes. I have learned much in the first semester of this course and I have grown to enjoy writing again because of this…

The Nature of a person's writing style can sometimes show more about an individual then the words they actually write, the poetic twists in sentence flow or the professional structure of their grammar. Writing styles are as unique as fingerprints and to define them can be as arduous as mastering the skills required to properly form one. In the quest to define my own style I discovered a detail that I have determined encapsulates the style with which I write; I write with passion. When I say I am a passionate writer I don't mean that I love to write but more that my level of personal affection toward the subject I am writing on directly affects the emotional nature I write in. In other words, I write more expressively and artistically the…

Throughout this year, my writing has progressed in both negative and positive ways, but mostly positive ways. I have improved in many ways from looking at some of my first writings. I remember walking around the hall and trying to find room 544. Walking in and seeing all of the books along with posters, realizing it was actually the first day of school. Finding my seat was not too hard because it happened to be the first one when walking in.…

In the given scenario, an engineer was hired two years ago at a mid-sized manufacturing plant. The engineer is a bright, detail-oriented person and a hard worker who has suggested changes at the plant that resulted in considerable savings on manufacturing energy costs and eliminated a significant safety hazard that had been overlooked by the previous engineer. Even with all of this, some co-workers resent the engineer because of clashing personalities, and they often play practical jokes on the engineer.…
