Reflective Essay: What I Learned In Counseling Classes

The acquisitions in this proficiency were the most meaningful to me because I was able to apply the skills learned in counseling classes and use them during group and individual sessions. In addition to this, I had the opportunity to use the skills I have learned in my graduate studies to counsel students, as well as provide other services to teachers and parents. Perhaps the most relevant activities in this proficiency were the counseling sessions. I had no idea how much skill goes into counseling students and for years thought therapy was about giving advice. Practicing the skills outline in the acquisitions coupled with my courses at Arkansas Tech University has taught me that counseling is about listening, guiding, and finding support services for families in need (AR1.6, AR 4.3, AR 8.1, AR 8.2, AR 8.3 and AR 8.5). Practicing interpersonal communication and empathy, whether it is in an individual or a group session, becomes second nature after a while (AR 1.5, AR 3.3, AR 6.4 and AR 9.2). I hope that someday these skills will become as natural to me as the act of teaching is now. I can see a difference in my confidence level already, but I have much to learn. The teachers and administrators I work with are starting to understand the role that a counselor plays. However, I become a school counselor I hope to be able to enlighten parents and guardian what school counselors have to offer them and their children. I have already provided professional development for the facility as my school and see where continuing that will put me in the role of a school leader.
