Rumors In Thirteen Reasons Why
There is a difference between knowing someone and hearing about someone. Just because you heard does not mean you know. When someone hears a rumor their first thought is to talk about it rather than take a step back and think about what that rumor could do to that person. In the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, he uses Clay, Hannah and Mr. Porter to express that rumors can destroy a person's reputation and outlook towards life. Sometimes a person's reputation can be contorted into many shapes because of rumors. When Hannah first moved to the town she created strong bonds with friend but then school started and so did the rumors: “She was new to the school, so all the rumors overshadowed everything else I knew about her”(Asher 218). …show more content…
In the beginning of the book Hannah could never say the word suicide. This gave us a foreshadow to the future: “the rumors reached me”(222). When Hannah first thought about suicide she tried to overcome it but then the situation took a turn for the worse. She conclusively gave up trying. Her mind was set, ultimately contributing to her demise. For Hannah her reputation was built on a bed of lies that all branched from a sick joke: “A reputation twist into something I don't recognize”(146). In the beginning when Hannah first came into the town she thought of it as if it was a new experience. Once school started she realized how your reputation was not in one's hand but the hands of their peers. For this Hannah’s reputation began to go downhill from the start, for one can never disprove a rumor. After the first rumor began Hannahs reputation and self confidence went down. The rumors kept coming back like a determined mosquito. All the rumors have continually chipped away at what little reputation and self worth she had held on too. On Hannah’s road to suicide she decided to stop once more and ask for help, she tried to reach out but fell just

Hannah Proctor looked at herself in the over large, somewhat gaudy mirror out back in the Legs 'n' Limbo, a rather low market strip joint owned by a guy named Stan. If he had a second name she didn't know it, or want to know it for that matter, he was a fair bit of a creep but he offered half decent pay in a seedy but good tipping establishment and a whole lot of security. It was the latter that Hannah had come for; the bouncers in this place were huge and highly protective over Stan's girls and right now that was what she needed, to disappear somewhere she could be safe for a little while. It had seemed like a good idea at the time, hide in plain sight, out in the open and under the dim lights and drunken patrons of a strip club, that and…

Before the event occurred, Rachel was Melinda’s best friend. After the party happened, Rachel became rude and detrimental to Melinda’s identity: “Her eyes meet mine for a second. ‘I hate you,’ she mouths silently” (5). These simple words describe their new relationship. From this point on Rachel (now known as Rachelle) would only treat Melinda with hate and disregard. Melinda’s other old friends also follow Rachel’s lead, and treat Melinda the same way. These simple actions against Melinda eventually lead to a new, changed identity in Melinda’s life. Melinda perfectly defined her new self in 3 words: “I am Outcast” (4). The other deep carver of Melinda’s life has been Andy Evans. Andy was the beginning of this entire change, as he was perpetrator/aggressor in Melinda’s rape. He (referred to as it) continues to treat her with the same attitude and plays the innocent around her, creating clear confrontation and misery in Melinda’s life: “IT is my nightmare and I cannot wake up. IT sees me. IT smiles and winks. Good thing my lips are stitched together...” (46). Andy’s actions— along with her ex-friend's’ actions— caused a clear impact on Melinda’s identity. Their actions caused Melinda to change in various ways, the most painful being her reluctance to speak, and her metaphorical stitching her lips…

I think that there are different types of rumors. Rumors could be life changing or just a trap. I also think rumors are very important. Rumors could prepare people for upcoming events in their life. I also agree with Difonzo when he said that rumors are very prevalent. I feel like rumors spread extremely fast. All you have to do is share it with one big mouth person and the whole world knows. I strongly agree with Difonzo’s claims dealing with…

In the article, Are You Driving Your Boss Crazy?, the author insinuates the worst mistake that can be made by an employee is gossiping. Nothing good ever comes from such behavior. Gossiping is almost always circulated around an office, hence the the word gossip, otherwise known as the rumor. The old adage, “what comes around goes around” most seemingly fits the word gossip. The rumor always gets back to the person it’s about, which leads to hurt feelings, anger, and possible revenge. Gossip becomes cyclic and hard to stop. Therefore, “you don’t want to be the one caught at the water cooler who spreads gossip or complains” (cite).…

It is that popularity is ultimately unfulfilling. This is proven in multiple ways by Heather, Melinda’s “friend”. Heather friend-dumps Melinda so she can fit in more with the Marthas, a popular group, but at the end of the year regrets it and comes bellycrawling back to Melinda for help. They have one last conversation in Melinda’s room when Heather asks for Melinda’s help decorating the venue for prom, where these words are said: “... she hates being a Marthadrone... ‘This whole year has been horrible- I hated every single day’” (Anderson 177). She is Heather, and Heather is bemoaning the fact that she is a Martha, saying that she hates it and that the whole year was horrible. Heather hates being a Martha, being “popular” because the Marthas make her do all the work. Doing all this work, though, has negative impacts on the rest of Heather’s life. As Melinda finds out, “Her grades are all the way down to Bs because of the time she has to spend waiting on her Senior Marthas” (Anderson 177). This shows how being popular can permanently affect you, and damage other parts of someone’s life. For example, bad grades and being a servant for the Marthas, or being preoccupied with something else, can lead to being very stressed, and stress has lots of negative impacts. Also, bad grades in high school can lead to stress over college, which has even more of an impact on someone’s life. These pieces of evidence show that popularity is unfulfilling for everyone, and will not help anybody later in…

Due to the small population size of North Atlantic right whales (~300 plus or minus 10%) and the low annual reproductive rate of about every five years, suggests that anthropogenic activities affecting mortality may be more prevalent for right whale population growth than for any other whale species. Ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements are considered the main factors contributing to reduced growth and recovery of the right whale population. Data collected from 1970 through 1999 indicates that the anthropogenic activities (ship strikes and gear entanglements) is responsible for at least two-thirds of the confirmed and possible mortality of non-neonate right whales. The data indicates that there were approximately 45 right whale mortalities…

Updike did an incredible job of creating a rumor that was able to spread. The rumor met the criteria Knapp stated for us. Knapp classified rumors and also discussed what makes a great rumor. It is easy to see why Updike’s rumor about Frank was able to spread among their community fast but also why they felt that “all” of New York City knew his secret. Rumor that is deceitful spreads a lot easier then a harmless rumor. We learn from Updike that a rumor can cause confusion with oneself but also it can tear relationships apart. In Frank’s case, the self-confusion he is left with is much worse.…
