Career Statement
I want to pursue a traditional Bachelor's of Science/Registered Nursing Degree at Hunter College. It has been 3 years since I decided to pursue nursing as my profession. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2012 (inspiring me to consider the nursing field) and my younger sister was diagnosed with an anxiety and respiratory condition that required my active care. For 4 years I have assisted my mother and sister with their medications by learning and helping them to understand the purpose of each one. bathing my mother, and helping her with any physical needs. There was not a moment that I was not content. After three years in a selective introduction nursing program called Pathways to Nursing offered at Queens borough community college, I earned a CPR certification and have covered many different nursing procedures. Once I made up my mind, I never questioned nursing because I realized it was what I was meant to do. When my mother fell ill (breast cancer) in 2012, I had to take up a leadership position within my own family and have discovered about some very important traits that I possess. Firstly, I learned that I can perform well under pressure and that despite being compassionate, my emotions do not often cloud my judgment and actions. Her diagnosis left me faint-hearted and anxious, but nonetheless, I took over various roles in the house such as cooking and cleaning. I never grew tired or frustrated, and I never felt bad for myself. Most importantly, I learned that I can function in tragic situations and I believe that is a valuable trait when entering any aspect of the medical field, especially nursing.
