Thank You for Smoking is a criticism of today's "culture of spin". The hero of the film is Nick Naylor (Eckhart), the Chief Spokesman for Big Tobacco whose task was to defend the rights of smokers and cigarette makers while health advertisements and programmes call for stopping smoking which has a relationship with cancer. He knows very well the bad and damaging effects of cigarettes which may lead to death, but he wanted to win against other people’s arguments, as that was his job & duties. That was clearly shown in the scene when he told his young son Joey, "The beauty of an argument is that if you argue correctly, you're never wrong." …show more content…
Naylor and his friends, firearm lobbyist Bobby Jay Bliss and alcohol lobbyist Polly Bailey, used to meet every week and jokingly call themselves The MOD Squad - "Merchants of Death" - as they sell Alcohol, Tobacco, and Weapons.
This is the satire which is everywhere in the movie.
The senator, one of the characters, called for a legislation to put a skull and crossbones on every cigarette pack, instead of the government health warning. The symbol is better than the words, he explains, because "They want those who do not speak English to die." That may show an inner policy which is based on a kind of discrimination
Naylor was fired due to the disclosure of his secrets in a newspaper by the hands of Katie Holmes a reporter whom he told all about his secrets after falling in love with
her.
The film's climax arises when Naylor was asked to evaluate his job with its negative influence, mentioning his son along too. Here, he was dazzled.
Jason Reitman, the movie's director, with his own unique style, and instead of filling his movie with characters smoking, coughing and wheezing, he didn't introduce any smoker in the movie.
Thank You For Smoking is full of humor to provoke fun. There will be something challenging and entertaining for everyone, apart from who you would vote for in the last election. It's a crowd pleaser, pure and simple. What you would admire most in "Thank You for Smoking" was its style which was full of satire; it's a very funny movie with a serious message.
