Why Do People Self-Harm? Self-harm is like an endless cycle, once it is done the harder it is to stop. This is true for all genders, ages, ethnic groups, and religions. Self-harm is caused by some form of pain, no matter it's reason. A person who self-harms is usually looking for some feeling of relief from the pain. In the article “Explainer: what is self-harm and why do people do it?”, it is mentioned that self-harm is used as a way to cope with their pain. The act of self-harm is used to deal with a number of problems caused by pain. People self-harm as a way to cope with something, to give a temporary fix to a problem, and because one's emotions have been negatively affected.

Whether it is to fix oneself from being emotionally broken, give a sense of relief, or to feel alive again but only for a moment. “Self-harm is a response to circumstances that cause overwhelming emotions people feel they cannot handle without creating external release” (Alcorn 19). People feel they cannot handle or find a fix to their pain resulting in them to self-harm. They have no sense of control when dealing with there emotions and need to find a fix for them, again leading to self-harm. Resulting to many different solutions, people need relief from their overwhelming emotions and tend to experience it from self-harm, but only temporarily, keeping this cycle up until it becomes a natural way of relief for them. Self-harm is “something that can give a person a sense of control over their mental or emotional state when they feel they have none” (Simon Crisp Clinical Psychologist n.p.). Some people feel that there emotions are out of hand, self-harm gives them a sense of control over them and gives a form of relief from the feeling that takes ahold of one's emotional and mental state. Sometimes people's minds sink into one's emotions, hurting there body awakes them or releases the mind from the depths or negative feelings they are experiencing. It is done in order to either reduce anxious thoughts, and other feelings of tension, or to be self punishment.     They have no clue how much they are affecting someone and how potentially life threatening their actions can be. They may think they are being harmless and just trying to make others laugh but really they are practically killing someone. Little do they know their victim is at home probably crying themselves to sleep every night because of the bully. That's thinking minimalistic, for all they know this poor person is at home laying on the floor barely breathing because they have hurt themselves physically so much they can't breathe.
