Sentenced As Adults
09 December 2011

Should teenagers’ accused of violent crimes be tried and sentenced as adults? There are many teenagers who do violent crimes, but to many people it’s different on how they should be punished. Most people who I spoke to said it all depends upon the crime and then there are some people who think the teenagers’ accused of the violent crime should be sentenced as adults, because they chose to act like adults. While it is wrong to commit a violent crime for a young teenager, I believe that they should not be sentenced as adults, because they have not yet developed full cognitive ability, should have the opportunity to counseling, and they should have a chance at life for a new beginning. There are many convicted teens that

Typically, juveniles who display a propensity for committing crime will continue to do so, even as they get older. Their crimes may even become more serious in nature. Therefore, teens that commit heinous crimes should be punished for their obnoxious behavior. In “Juvenile Doesn’t Deserve Life Sentences” by Gail Garinger, he states that “a juvenile doesn’t deserve life in prison because most teens haven’t reached their full maturity”.…

“Five years ago juveniles were being tried for shoplifting, now we have murders, breaking out car windows … it all ties into gang activity. Six to eight months ago, a juvenile I represented said he wanted to be in a gang, so he robbed an elderly woman.” Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because when they commit a crime and don't get caught or have any consequences after, they are basically walking around our streets with no one to notice they are criminals. If they did it once, they can do it again and get away with it. A crime is a crime no matter what the age of the criminal, they need to be punished.…

Juvenile receives crucial punishment, how could you give a twelve year old sentenced to life without possibility of parolo. Now that is just heartless to do something like that to a juvenile. A teenager should not be tried on the same level as an adult, if they can not do things an adult does. Juveniles are too young and know little about the world; therefore, they should not receive the harsh punishment that adults are being given. Since we are the parents of our kids “It’s why they can’t smoke, or drink, or go to R movies without our OK” (Lundstrom). Adults are lot older, intelligent, mature than teens; therefore, they should not be tried on the same level as adults. Although minors have some knowledge their brains are not matured like adults to make right and wrong decisions. It goes far as beyond to saying teens will not know what they did wrong until they are told. In the article “Juveniles Don’t Deserve Life Sentences” Gail Garinger states, “Brain imaging studies reveal that the regions of the adolescent brain responsible for controlling thoughts, actions and emotions are not fully developed. They cannot be held to the same standards when they commit terrible crimes.” This shows that teenagers are not capable of making decisions and they can not control what they do, even if it is wrong they will not know. Teens should not be charged as adults for the crimes they…

This research paper will examine whether or not juveniles that commit violent crimes should be tried as an adult. Through research, I will establish an argument that children who commit the crimes of an adult should be punished as an adult. Data based on experience and observation detailing the number of juvenile offenders that are housed in adult prisons and jails, as well as the number of prisoners serving life sentences that were earned by committing violent crimes before the age of 15 will be included in this research paper. Finally, I suggest that children who commit crimes that are considered violent enough to even be considered for adult criminal court should in fact be tried in that very venue.…

There are many laws that specifically prohibit teen and adolescent under the age of 18 from doing many things and are there to “protect” us. There is always a punishment when they are broken. The same should apply, if a juvenile is to commit a heinous crime like homicide or first-degree murder, they should be tried and sentenced for the crime. Therefore, I do agree that juveniles should be tried as an adult when they commit the same crimes as that of an adult.…

As of June 2012, juveniles who committed murder could not be sentenced to life in prison because it violates the eighth amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment, however justices argue that mandatory sentences reflected the will of American society that heinous crimes committed by juveniles should be punished by life in prison.Juveniles should not be treated like adults because their brain is not fully developed. Juveniles are still immature and they are still risk taking and learning self control.I think Juveniles should not be sentenced to life in prison because they still have a chance to rehabilitate themselves and their brain is not fully developed causing them to make bad choices.…

More and more juveniles are being incarcerated in adult prisons because of legislation dropping the age juveniles are allowed to be tried as an adult and expanding the list that are considered adult crimes. States vary as to how old and where a juvenile is incarcerated. They may have to wait until a certain age to be transferred to an adult facility or they have to go in ight after sentencing. Sometimes they are in the general population of adults and others they try to keep them in different areas, but it all depends on the state and what their legislature says. Adult prisons do not meet the needs of a developing juvenile therefore putting them at risk for abuse and attempting suicide. Studies have shown that the younger juveniles are…

In the United States, anyone who is charged for committing a crime before the day of their 18th birthday is considered a juvenile and depending on the severity of the case shall be tried as a juvenile. There are some cases; however, where the juvenile justice system should be harder on the juvenile, but in most cases they should not go to an adult prison. There are most certainly some cases in which the juvenile should face the adult justice system, but for petty instances, a juvenile court will suffice. I find it hard to agree that a juvenile convicted for crimes dealing with drugs, alcohol, traffic violations, etc. should be tried in an adult court to receive punishment; however, I do believe that someone who commits rape, murder, kidnapping, or any other major crimes of the sort should be taken to an adult court. “Old enough to do the crime, old enough to do the time,” is a quote I remember hearing as I was growing up, but I was not taught that it applied to small or minor crimes, but often serious ones involving the harming of another individual. Placing juveniles in adult prisons can cause them to be put in danger, when in reality many of them can be “fixed”…

    Juveniles Tried As Adults

If minors who commit violent crimes were tried as adults in court, the number of violent crimes committed by youth would decrease (Layzell, 2005). In the future, the number of violent crimes in general would decrease as harsher penalties and punishments would be used to keep violent offenders in prison for longer sentences. In the unified crime reports violent crimes can be defined as murder, rape, armed robbery, aggravated assault, larceny-theft and the like depending on state law. According to statistics the number of violent crimes committed by people under the age of eighteen has gone down since its peak in 1994 (Estudillo, 2001). That is not to say that violent crime among youths is uncommon. Of the 2.5 million juveniles arrested in 1999, one hundred and four thousand of the arrests were for violent crimes. “Juveniles accounted for 16 percent of all violent crime arrests and thirty two percent of all property crime arrests in 1999” (PBS Frontline, 2005). The more recent numbers in certain cities vary. Depending on the city and/or state is where the difference in numbers shows for the amount of juveniles who have been put behind bars. In my perspective, it can be argued that violent crimes will decrease if a tougher penalty is assessed based on the juvenile being tried as an adult in court.…

Should juveniles who commit adult offence like murder, rape and armed robbery etc. be charged or dealt with as an adult? The primary difference in dealing with a juvenile meaning a person that is 18 years or younger the goal is not to punish the juvenile, but rather rehabilitate, is that fair? Or is society as a whole are guilty and to blame for forsaking the future generation? The juvenile offences are skyrocketing at an alarming rate that it is hard to view the graphic and horrific crimes of the juvenile as being anything but civil or delinquent, especially when the juvenile is committing bloody murder.…
