“It’s a fixer-upper of a planet, but we could make it work.” [Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX] The idea of colonizing Mars seems pretty far away, but consider Apollo. No one thought it could happen except NASA, and it seems like that is true for Mars One. Mars One could help humans more than just unhinging that need to explore and find new things. Colonizing Mars could help people fix dwindling resources, fix overpopulation, and escape global warming.
Natural fuel is a very costly and limited thing humans need to live comfortably. Mars has an abundant pocket of natural fuel that could be used to fuel cars and spaceships. With more natural fuel there could be more energy. Burning fossil fuel like natural gas on Mars could
help humans create a greenhouse effect on Mars. Also, NASA has found coal veins very much abundant on Mars. Coal mining could be one of the first jobs on Mars. That being said, humans would have to start an economy on Mars. With economy comes government and laws, and then you have a full civilization. Lastly, if the future humans on Mars get fuel for spaceships, they could make docking stations to refuel spaceships going to planets beyond Mars.
Next is the thought of overpopulation, but think about this: Earth is already overpopulated. Countries can’t provide for every single one of their peoples. Also, most countries are poor and have tons of trash flying around in the air. Their governments don’t have the funding to clean that air. Also, people have diseases from unsanitary water. Lastly, some people don’t have sewer or running water so their gunk gets thrown all over the place. By moving to Mars, humans would have more space in the future. They’ll have a whole other planet to use for space. All though it would be fixed later because we don’t have the technology right now to transfer mass amounts of people.
Global warming is very scary for the people on Earth. Melting ice caps, submerged ocean borders, and super hot areas from too many greenhouse gasses. By moving to Mars, humans would not have to deal with the effects of global warming. Right now, Mars is before global warming. People can melt ice caps with machines and change the atmosphere to start global warming (but controlled, unlike Earth) on Mars. By doing this, people warm the planet to suit their needs. By warming the planet, living will be easier because people won’t have to wear space suits all the time.
Looking at the other side of this argument, will show that colonizing Mars could be bad. People will die. Period. It’s a one way trip, and humans don’t have the technology to get the resources that humans need like food and water. Although, people still might be able to grow crops. Even if they did, it would only equal 20% of the food needed to fuel the mission. Also, they would never see Earth again.
Dwindling resources, overpopulation and global warming. All of these factors come into play for why humans should colonize Mars.
