damage to the animal. The animal could help with a breakthrough in medicine or just be another victim of testing. This is one of the only ways scientists know for sure that their medicine works. Many medicines and other products that are used today are from successes in animal testing.
In the 1940’s psychiatrist John Cade discovered that lithium helps a person that has maniac-depressive disorder by testing it out on guinea pigs. This was one of the first successful and productive animal tests in it’s history. These discoveries are very important to psychological health and treatment. Without this discovery many other types of medicines would not be possible. There are many other types of animal testing successes but one of the most successful ones are the ones that can relate back to human health and wellbeing. Arguably the greatest discovery ever made was when penicillin was created. This medicine was first tested on mice that were infected with staphylococci. Once the penicillin was given to the mice in a matter of days the mice were cured of any type of infection. After this test was successfully executed penicillin was introduced for human use and was used to cure many other types of diseases. Many of the discoveries made by companies were benefitial to human consumers. But for any type of success there is failures that come along. Every year 50 to 100 animals are used in testing, 10 million are killed directly from the testing. Many others are executed just from complications from testing. Animal testing is a good and bad thing for our
society. Without animal testing we would not have practical things like medicine or organ transplants. Testing on animals taught us more about humans and evolution. Without animal testing the entire world of medicine may not have ever been created. Epidemics would have been spread without end and without a cure. Your friend or relative may not be living today if it weren’t for animal testing. The basis of life is from other forms of life. So without animals we wouldn’t be here today. If we look ahead in the future how many people would have died if it weren’t for a certain medicine? One type of medicine could save millions of lives just for 100-200 mice. Think of the surgeries you have had in your lifetime; would you have had that surgery if it weren’t tested on animals first? Someone that has had a broken bone may not have had it ever grown back the right way if it wasn’t tested on animals beforehand.
