Caesar. He expects the people of Rome to be “thinkers” just like him, but what he doesn't understand is that they are “followers” and follow the people who connect with them in an emotional level, like Antony did in his speech. Antony on the other hand appeals to the crowd’s feelings (pathos) right from the beginning. He has strong feelings about the death of his friend Julius. He hates the conspiracy and wants to avenge his friend but also is worried about himself, trying to obtain a position of power. After the death of Caesar, Rome will be looking for someone new to follow and when Antony said “You all did love him once, not without cause: What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?” the people started to be persuaded.
“My heart is in the coffin here with Caesar.” (Act III, ii, 108) is said by Antony in his speech. After he said this he showed the crowd the bloodied body of Caesar. Antony made a good decision appealing to the crowd’s emotions rather than logically trying to persuade them. Brutus’ speech seems more formal and thought out, whereas Antony’s is more informal and had to be thought of at the last minute because he had no time to prepare because the assassination took him by surprise. Overall Antony made the most impact on the crowd.
Brutus made many mistakes and failed to try and understand the way the citizens of Rome think, thus leading to his downfall. Antony took advantage of his mistakes and made a bigger impact on the citizens because, he appealed to their emotions and didn't think of them as “thinkers” but “followers”
