Lancaster board a flight to Amsterdam where their adventure begins. Augustus takes Hazel to the Oranjee, where they eat dinner outside right at the edge of the canal. The next day, they meet Peter Van Houten, the author of An Imperial Affliction, Hazel’s favorite book. His actions and responses towards them are very rude, which makes them want to leave. He tells them that,“‘ They’re [the characters in the book] fictions, Nothing happens to them”’ (Green 191). Peter Van Houten did not answer the questions Hazel had and she is sorry that Augustus used his only wish for something so useless. In both books, the main characters kiss while they are on their adventure. They also open up to each other and learn more about their lives. When Augustus and Hazel return from their trip, Augustus gets admitted into the hospital. Hazel knows that the time is near and it is not long before Augustus dies. Comparatively, in All the Bright Places, Finch takes his own life by drowning himself in a lake because he was scared to face his depression, which led it to become very severe. Violet and Hazel are overcome with grief because their boyfriends have died. Even though she is grieving, Violet continues exploring because she has to finish the assigned project. Furthermore, she goes to the last few locations and realizes that Finch had already explored them before killing himself. On the final adventure, Violet realizes why Finch picked a church to be the last place
