Six Dimensions of Health Worksheet

Part 1

For each of the following six dimensions of health, list at least one characteristic, activity, belief, or attitude that reflects that dimension in your life. Provide a brief explanation with each example. Refer to Ch. 1 in the text for explanations of these dimensions.

Physical health: Outer Appearance; to me this is how much I weight, & how much food/nutrition I intake.

Social health: Relationships socially; this is affected by the people I have social relationships with.

Intellectual health: To me this includes how I think. This can be positive or negative.

Environmental health: Things that surround me; to me this is anything I am around, whether it be outside or at work.

Emotional health: Stress; to me this is the most important, your emotions play one of the biggest roles in your health.

Spiritual health: My beliefs/religion. To me this is also one of the most important things.

Part 2

In approximately 125 to 200 words, describe health and wellness in your own words using the ideas and concepts for each of the six dimensions of health.

To me health & wellness is being healthy, in all the six dimensions. I believe one should take care of themselves, whether it be physically, emotionally, or socially.
It is important to have a healthy social health & have positive relationships with everything and everyone. I also believe that environmental plays the biggest factor in your overall health & wellness. Everything that surrounds you can affect your health, you should be sure to surround yourself with positive people & environment. Your beliefs & rituals also play a role in your health, depending on who you are this can play a huge role in your wellness. Emotionally, it is important to have healthy relationships.     If you are missing one of the six I think it affects the other areas of health. I see this with my son who has anxiety and panic attacks, when he has an attack then he is more likely to get sick like with a cold and then it takes him forever to feel his old self again, he says he is never really good. I know for me being spiritual healthy makes it easier for me to be emotionally healthy. I have to be happy and feel good about me with is hard but I am learning it is ok not to be perfect as long as you are happy with your body, mind and soul. I know that I feel all around better when I can work out in some way whether it be working out, working in the garden or taking a walk. It is important to take care of yourself by eating healthy, protecting your skin with sunscreen, not going outside when the pollen level is high for me.     Most people will think of physical wellness as how they are feeling, whether they are sick, tired, or injured in some sort of way. According to Harper, he defines physical wellness as the ability to perform daily activities in a safe, capable, and efficient manner, as well as the physical capacity to respond effectively in unusual situations (2008). Harper further mentions that there are five components of physical wellness, such as cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and flexibility. If a person does not have physical wellness then they are at an increased risk of a lifestyle disease such as hypokinetic disease, diabetes, and obesity. Qualities of a person that inhibits physical wellness, as discussed by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research are controlling your weight, combating health conditions and diseases, improves your mood, boosts your energy, sleep better, put the spark back into your love life, and physical fitness can be fun (2011). Furthermore the general goal is to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day in order to attain the above qualities (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2011).
