The pyramids have gotten higher and the flips and twist more spectacular. But unfortunately, most of the practice and preformatted takes place on a hard surface, thus increasing the opportunity for serious injury. Cheerleading has more than three million participants today, and many feel that the activity should be designated as a sport in all states. This would allow the rules and regulations governing other sports to cover this one as well, specially with regard to safety.

Cheerleading uniforms have had quite an evolution. In the early days uniforms consisted of a letter sweater ove a buttoned shirt or turtleneck and pants for the men and long skirts for women. CHeerleaders wore saddle shoes or flat canvas sneakers. As time marched on, skirt lengths shortened, tops became more fitted, and more athletic shoes became the norm. Cheerleading became more athletic and not just vocal chants, so the uniforms had to fit the change. These cheerleaders entertain the crowds as well as represent their team’s franchise at appearances in the community such as charity events. Professional sport is big business and the cheerleaders was the Baltimore Colts, the most famous for their entrances onto the professional scene with their skimpy outfits and elaborate dance moves we the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders in the seventies.

Although cheerleading is still not considered a sponsored sport by the NCAA, many groups are working to try to change this. Cheerleading camps and competitions have grown in popularity.
