Students! Don’t you just hate the sound of your alarm? It forces you to get out of your warm cozy bed even though you wish you could sleep longer. And what do you do? You sleep for one more minute. And then the one minute turns into 5 minutes. And then 5 minutes turns to 15 minutes. And then that turns into half an hour. Before you know it, you are running late for school. Trust me I know how it feels. I have experienced this multiple times.
Teachers! Don’t you just wish that you could begin your class right when the bell rings without students coming in late? Don’t you wish that all of your students would focus and participate rather than sleep and not pay attention? Don’t you wish that you could have your entire class pass without anyone

Is there a way to solve these problems? Yes, I am here so the school board can see that moving the start time to 8:30 will solve all of these problems. But without the support of parents and the students this change won’t happen.

Now let me tell you a story of how starting school at 7:30 has affected me. Many students will relate to my story. This story took place just yesterday. I went to sleep at midnight because I had to go to practice, I had to do all of my homework, I had to study for all of my tests, and I had to study for my finals (DO A SOUND THAT SHOWS THAT YOU ARE TIRED). Doesn’t that sound like a busy day? I woke up to a sound that sounded like bullets from a gun. And I wonder what it was? It was my alarm beeeeeeping. It continued to beep and beep and beep. It got louder and louder and louder. I finally stood up and turned it off. Then I thought to myself, “It’s only 6:15” 1 more minute won’t hurt. And then I thought to myself, 5 more minutes won’t hurt. And then I thought to myself, 10 more minutes won’t hurt. I continued to sleep on and before I knew I woke up and it was 6:45. I jumped out of my bed and I ran to my dresser. I put my clothes on quickly.I brushed my teeth quickly. The thoughts running through my

How would you feel if you woke up every morning around 6 or 7 a.m. for nearly 180 days a year? How would you feel if I said you had to do that for about 12 years or so? Would you say it sounded tiring and challenging? Or would you say you couldn’t do it? If you agreed with any of the questions I just asked, then congratulations, you're now a little closer to having a teen mindset. Typical teenagers have to wake up every school day around 6 a.m. for 12 years in middle and high school. Not only is this virtually not achievable for normal human beings, but it’s also extremely not healthy for their growing bodies. These school start times make students seriously sleep deprived and fall at risk of destructive mental and social behavior. Academic achievement and health also decreases because of these early start times. Also, because most students are going through puberty at this time in their life, their bodies tell them to…

high school institutions. High school adolescents generally wake up around 6:30 A.M., leave home around 7:10 A.M., and typically begin the school day slightly before 8:00 A.M. (National Sleep Foundation, NSF, 2006). Meanwhile, the average high school start time (between 7:51 A.M. and 7:56 A.M.) is not conducive to the sleep patterns and biological demands of the average high school student. Among 9th to 12th grade adolescents, 43% reported going to bed between 10:00 P.M. and 10:59 P.M. and 38% after 11:00 P.M. Astonishingly, 54% of 12th grade adolescents reported going to bed after 11:00 P.M. on school nights (NSF,…

Therefor I don’t think our school board should add time to each school day. I think we should keep our schedule starting at 7:30 and ending at 2:30. That way we can get home do chores, play and go to any afterschool activities. If we changed our school hours that would interfere with parents/guardians work schedules. Now with the schedules our school has we don’t get to restless with the teachers or other…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…
