In the article, How to Use the STAR Interview Response Technique, by Alison Doyle, she discusses how to properly use this technique during an interview. This particular technique is used to help the interviewee on how to properly answer questions. Basically, it gives them an idea of how to answer questions that are based on a person’s past experience. In the article, Doyle briefly discusses what the STAR process is. She describes the process as being a method used in answering behavioral interview questions. The interviewer wants to see how you will react to a question about your past and wants you to think of a time in which you had to deal with a customer, coworker, and etc. STAR is an acronym for situation, task, action, and result. The situation is the problem that you had to face. For instance, there was a time at work when a customer was getting really frustrated about having an overdraft fee because they claimed that they had money in their account. The next step is the task, in which the person is to describe their responsibility in the situation given. In the example given above, the task was to resolve the conflict with the customer. Basically, they are stating that it is recommended to prepare yourself by thinking of the different scenarios they may ask. Doyle states, “First, make a list of the skills and/or experience required for the job… Then, consider specific examples of times you displayed those skills” (Doyle, How to Use the STAR Interview Response Technique, 2017). It is important to practice saying your answer out loud because they may come out differently than what you are thinking in your head.
