Study Habits
Describing my current study habits is a very easy task. I have been trying to change my study habits since my first semester in college. I have been a Sierra College student for three years. These habits are very simple: “postpone” and “rush”. By “postpone” and “rush” I mean that I always wait till the last minute and then rush to do my homework what makes me feel overwhelmed. During two years I was taking two or three online classes and just because they have different due dates I succeeded. If they had due dates the same day (Sunday, for instance) that would be the end of my college life.
So, by looking at myself from this point I have very big problems. There are a lot of areas that must be improved. They are: set goals, stay positive, reward yourself, study space, postpone unnecessary things, and the most important is time management. There are many greatest obstacles that prevent me from meeting the demands of an online class. But the most crucial are time management and study space. I have two children. They are four and one years old. I am a person who likes to do my homework when it is quiet and calm. I am easily getting distracted by noise. Therefore, I need a place where I can think and do my homework without being distracted. And last but not list is time management. This is one of the greatest obstacles that prevent me from being successful online and not only online but even a regular student.
I hope I will be able to overcome these challenges someday. I understand that without trying you cannot achieve a desire goal. “You never know what you can do, till you try.” First of all I need to create a simple “To Do” list. That makes me create a schedule of things I need to do and stick to the plan. I spread my homework by days doing each assignment in particular day, so I can spend some time on every assignment evenly. Therefore, by the end of the week I won’t overwhelm myself by spending a whole day doing all my assignments at once. This will help me

Finding time to study is tough, with a twenty-month old running around. I wish I could freeze time and just play with him! Sometimes, it is so hard to focus and I lose my time to study. I have started going other places to study. I am taking my teachers’ advice and picking up my books and going to the library, or I will lock myself in my room and turn on the television to drown out the noise of everyone around me. So far it has worked. I hope it continues.…

It is also a struggle to get back into good study habits. One sometimes finds it more fun to play with their children rather than study. Allow 20 minutes a day to study. Keeping a written daily schedule on a pocket calendar is a good way to stay on task. Another way to develop good study habits is to write homework down. Also write down when tests are due on the calendar. When you check your emails, also check the calendar daily. Don’t be discouraged, consider the struggles as exciting, and motivational, it really can be fun.…

One has to approach school as an added duty in one’s life. I must add an extra responsibility to my daily chores and activities. I am venturing into an activity I have not done any schooling for over 30 plus years now. School is something I must learn all over again. This changes our everyday routines to a point that we all must learn to work well with this new education. I am glad that in the past I had learned great tools to work with while working on these new responsibilities. Making it great while I was getting my A.S. degree in Florida Tech College out of Orlando, FL. Back then everything was paper and pencil or pen. Now I see an all new era of schooling and especially online. I force myself to get things done early, just like I do when I need to be somewhere for an appointment. I arrive much earlier than requested so I have time to sit and plan what will be going on at this appointment. I turn that into the same here with my online class. I don't like to be late for anything even dinner at home. Work on my college activities and required assignments take on the same aspect that I apply to my personal life. Both must be taken on with kid gloves. But as long as I keep in mind the goals created for school and stick to them I should have no trouble working out any obstacles that come my…

MY first strategy I think is very useful for my college career is one of my own “Setting Priorities”. Setting priorities is as clear as it sounds. This is useful for someone who seems to slack off in urgencies, and give in to less important concerns. For example I would have school, work, and soccer as my main priorities, but I would get distracted playing video games. I than set certain amount of time for my main priorities each week making it a schedule. I would set for school double the amount of class time as homework/studying time off the class. As work goes, it is the same weekly schedule which coordinates with my class meetings. For soccer I would train three times a week two hours a day. I set the time for my training after I’m done or on a break from my school work, and regular work. So after setting my priorities to a schedule I know what my other less urgent concerns are, such as video games, surfing the internet, hanging out a lot with friends. This strategy has helped me set my life to limit on certain things to accomplish and remember what my goals are. For instance, a day I was tired from work and did not want to go to train and started to play video games. One hour into it I realized that I was wasting my time on video games, when I could’ve been training for soccer, trying to accomplish my goal to make the 4 time…

One of the most important first steps is to learn about time management. Learning the strategies of a good time management system and applying them ultimately will benefit the student tremendously. Stanford (n.d.) states that time management skills will help students manage their goals effectively which will assist them in completing homework assignments on schedule and prepare for examinations. Students will have to monitor their time and adjust it accordingly for studies and assignments. While monitoring my time, I found it helpful in selecting the best times to study and complete my homework assignments. It is suggested that students spend at least two hours studying for every hour of class time. I personally plan on following this rule to give me adequate time to complete my assignments. Every student is different, but he can find a time management system that works best to balance school, work, and family. The planning system utilizing a list with prioritizing tasks as “A”, “B”, or “C” along with an “Outlook” calendar seems to work best. Students also need to learn how to set goals and to incorporate their short- term, mid-term and long-term goals into their academic lives. This will allow them to recognize how necessary their short-term goals are and how they affect their long-term goals. One cannot achieve long-term goals without first succeeding in their short-term goals. They go hand in hand. For example, a long-term goal is to get a BA degree, but I cannot accomplish this without first having success in my short-term goal of attending all classes and completing all work assignments on time. For success in another long-term goal of good health, I would need to be committed to eating healthy foods and not over eat because of stress. Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep regardless of other commitments will ensure students a refreshed and…

I am a hopeless procrastinator. I don’t start homework until its due, if at all. That used to be okay when I was in high school. I was able to work, go to school, participate in a plethora of extra-curricular activities, and date, all while maintaining an above 3.0 GPA. It's just a really bad habit that I've never actually taken the time to fix. When I was in high school I loved succeeding, but I never had to really work for it. It just came to me naturally. I've gotten to college and while none of the material is really complicated to me I just don't have the interest for it. I have terrible time management skills. I don’t keep up with important dates and the dates I do remember I put off until the last minute.…

I also noticed that I have a bad habit of looking at my phone repeatedly which is also a distraction. I’ve tried to put it away but I use it so much that is part of my everyday life. I also learned that I need to have at least an hour nap after school if I don’t, I feel drained and can’t stay focused. Some pressure I felt while living my ideal schedule was having to do other things that come up unexpectedly and still try to stay on my ideal schedule, the way I dealt with it was by seeing what I really need to get done and what was not that important and could be delayed. Some adjustments I made this week were doing my homework and studying right when I got home, Reducing the amount time I spent out with my friends and going to bed earlier. Doing my homework and studying when I got home made it easier on me because I didn’t have to worry about doing it late at night which also allowed me to get to bed earlier. Reducing the amount of time spent with my friends allowed for more studying time even though they thought it was lame I felt it really did benefit me. What really distracts me is my phone I use it so much that I feel like I need it to survive. It is a major distraction when I studying because one notification can lead to opening up social media apps and soon enough an hour goes by of me being on my phone and not studying. One thing I need to change in the future is trying to eliminate distraction even if that means turning off my phone when studying especially if it’s for a test. After living my ideal schedule this week even though it was difficult I felt like I used my time very effectively because I didn’t have to worry or stress over homework which was my big problem when recording my current…

College is difficult, it demands a lot of your time, and attention. Have you ever said the words,” I will do it later”? We are all procrastinators in some way or another; the difference is some people stick to their deadlines (with the proneness to misjudge the amount of time it takes to finish). According to Center for Student Excellence (CSE) advisors many college students find themselves waiting until the last minute to study or complete assignments, and students often find themselves procrastinating due to their newfound independence, a multitude of distractions and a lack of motivation (Patrick, 2014). One explanation for procrastination is that it is a choice. We have a choice to complete a task now instead of later. Another explanation is that it is a way to deal with anxiety, boredom, guilt, frustration and anger. When we procrastinate it can adversely affect our health. In a study done in 2007, researchers found that while at the beginning of the semester students who procrastinated showed less signs of illness and lower levels of stress than non-procrastinators, by the end of the semester, the procrastinators were found to have higher levels of stress and illness…

One strategy for overcoming the pressures of student life is time/self-management. At the college level the student is held accountable for his or her education. This means no excuses. It does not matter that the dog “ate your homework”. Had you made time to feed the dog he may not have chosen to eat the homework instead. Time management does not mean to give all your energy and focus to only working on school assignments. It simply means to designate time for completing these tasks. Creating a to-do list whether it be on notebook paper, post-it notes, or using my personal favorite, apps on cell phones are great ways to keep account of what needs to be completed and allows you to organize and prioritize your task. “We tend to give top priority to what we enjoy studying, yet the courses that we find most difficult often require the most creative energy” (Ellis, 2011). This is also true for most aspects of our lives. Almost anyone would much rather hang out with friends or watch television than to work on an essay but this only tightens the deadline and adds unnecessary stress to the equation. One should set…
