Research Paper on “Preparation for the Next Life” Preparation for the Next Life is a fiction book written by American author, Atticus Lish. It was originally published in 2014. It is a very deep and a meaningful book. It is about life, bad options, and love. The novel is mostly over a love story of Zou Lei, a young lady who is an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan, and of Brad Skinner who is a war veteran. Skinner suffers from some severe post-traumatic stress disorder which leads him to depression and anxiety. “Those high in Neuroticism have less impulse control, are less happy in their relationships generally, and are more insecure than are those who are low in this trait” (Gibson 187). The atmosphere of the story establishing throughout the book. The book is telling a love story with a lot of ache in it. Love is a mixture of so many different emotions and mental states. Some people have positive experience of love, while on the other hand, some people have not so positive experience of love. Love is full of emotions. Love represent a large number of virtues, such as, honor, kindness, honesty, respect and many more. Love is the most purest and the glorious thing one can experience. However, love is not a fairytale like how some people think of it. Love is all about making sacrifices for the lover’s happiness. The book has indirect characterizations where the personality of the characters is shown through their actions. “Negative options, it seems, upend many of the benefits of choice” (Perfecto 660). One of the main characters, skinner makes bad choices because he does not feel good on himself. He does not believe in himself. Since Skinner is always dealing with depression he ends up not making any good choices. He treats Zou Lie badly sometimes, he yells at her and tells her to shut her mouth. “This pulled the power cord right out of her” (Lish, 2014).
