Summer Vacation is a not necessity for both students and teachers. I believe with a true passion that summer vacation is indubitably the reason for students falling behind and losing knowledge.
In "This Is Your Brain on Summer" by Jeff Smink, states in the opening paragraph that "If students are not engaged in learning over the summer, they lose skills in math and reading. Summers off are one of the most important, yet acknowledged, causes of underachievement in our schools." Also backed up in the article "Why Do We Still Have Summer Vacation?" by Dan Luzer when we say "On average, American children lose the equivalent of about one month of instruction over summer vacation. Luzer states “There's a lot of talk about how America is “losing ground” in education—the country ranks 27th in high school completion rates among developed nations.” When being compared to other nations, International Mathematics and Science Study conducted an international test of student knowledge, the findings; American fourth graders ranked among the top 10 countries in performance in math and science. Although when reached eighth grade, they fall below the underdeveloped countries. Countries ahead of us and that stay ahead of us don’t differ much other than their schooling schedules. Making that final argument invalid proves that the only benefit of summer vacation is not having one. If we can aspire to be one of the top countries in education and change the world and how we perceive it, making unbelievable technological advances, living in the future, and all we would have to do is continue schooling through the season of summer, instead of depleting our knowledge, why aren’t we?
