Summary: We Should Change Our Relationship With Britain
George Washington, 837 Liberty Court, Fairfax, Virginia.

January 1776

Your Highness, King George III.

I'm George Washington, Loyalist, member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. Recently, I have noticed a scarcity of food since the closing of Boston Harbor. Also, I have noticed, as I am riding through the town, many colonists in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter, and many more British soldiers than usual. I feel that the situation between the colonists and yourself needs to change. I also feel that we should remain loyal British citizens, however, I think you should lower the taxes and the harshness levels. I believe so because of taxation without representation, conflict between us colonists and Britain, and that we have tried to make peace with you several times, but have been denied.

The first reason I think that we should change our relationship with Britain is because of taxation without representation. U.S. colonists are getting taxed on tea, paper, glass, lead, and tea without any representatives in Parliament. Parliament made lots of people poor because of taxes on everyday items, which, in turn, caused the colonists to

For example, during the Boston Massacre, your soldiers shot and killed 5 colonists just for calling names and throwing snowballs at them. Another example is the Quartering Act. Colonists had to house British Soldiers for free just so they could keep us from moving West. Wouldn’t that also just cost you money, to send more soldiers across 3000 miles of water to stop us from traveling West? Also, it wouldn’t hurt to have just a couple thousand colonists move West and bring weapons to defend themselves. They could have more kids and populate the area. The last example of conflict between your soldiers and you is that the British “enslaved” the colonists and abused their power over

In the time of the French-Indian War the Americans seemed to have many complaints. The British Parliament placed many duties and restrictions on the 13 colonies during this War. While some may argue Britain's actions were justified, that is not the case. They unfairly taxed the colonies, used the money purely for their own profit, and robbed them of their rights.…

Sister, did you know that the raw materials that come into England are bought from us colonies at an extraordinary inexpensive price? Perhaps so but did you that the then finished products are brought to the colonies at an outrageous price even though we provided the raw materials? We as struggling colonists also do not agree that we only serve the purpose of enriching those in our founding country. Because of the mother country´s injustices many colonist resent not being able to manufacture our own raw materials. Oh Sister, if this is not a single act of tyranny that what…

The fight originally started over the shortage of jobs. If the British government paid them a little more, the shortage of jobs wouldn’t be that big of an issue, and the colonists would not have acted in such a harsh manner. The British government should have known there was tension between these two groups and tried to solve their differences by making more jobs available, more salary for soldiers or fewer soldiers across…

In 1763, the French and Indian War ended by the final defeat of the French and their Native American allies in America. When the Americans thought the British were leaving, they did the exact opposite. The British brought in more soldiers and these same American colonists found themselves locked with the British more violent than ever. Britain sent more troops to receive money for their war depts. This was shocking news for the America’s English colonists because there was still the policy of salutary neglect existing. Due to this violent control, Americans felt unfair and as if they had no choice to follow what the British say. To stand up as one voice towards Britain, the American colonists justified in waging war and breaking away from Britain. Therefore, the American colonists were reasonable in doing this.…

According to your response to my letter, the grievances we have made are preposterous. I cannot change your mind I just hope to open your eyes to what is really happening in the colonies and help you see why our complaints are sensible. The British are not protecting us by leaving their troops on our land during a time of peace. We are already paying the debt from the war with France , we shouldn’t have to pay for an army that is not needed. The Townshend Acts are not reasonable, considering that we don’t get to elect the royal officials that are supposedly representing us by making such acts. The Navigation Acts were based off…

should withdraw from the area (45). One should be able to see why the opinions of those like Mr. Crooker are the correct ones to side with by acknowledging how hypocritical it is for the U.S. to adopt policies of those like the rulers they once fought against and how many lives are being lost fighting for a colony the U.S. has no place in. Mr. Crooker points out how the imperialistic policies the U.S. has begun to practice are similar to those the U.S. resisted against in the past when he says, “To buy 10,000,000 distant islanders is the expansion of Jefferson Davis... To tax far-off colonists without their consent is the expansion of the policy of [British king] George III…” (47).…

Just for Britain to be known as the rich and powerful. Most of their money was taken and…
