In this exercise, you must also get rid of instances of noun clutter (NC)—i.e., verbs that have been changed into nouns by adding suffixes such as -ion, -tion, -ment, -ent, -ance, -ence, -ancy, -ency, etc. Also, when necessary, you may add a "doer" (e.g., "Bob," "Jane," "We," "They," etc.) to passive sentences if the doer is missing in the original, in order to rephrase the sentence so it’s active.…

The third observation was during language arts and reading period. The students were reviewing subject and predicate using sentences from a workbook. Mrs. Yglesias would copy a sentence from the workbook onto the pyrethrum board. Then she would choose a student to read the sentence and select the subject. Straightaway, she would underline the student’s answer on the board with a red marker. Subsequently, the teacher would choose a different student to reread the sentence and identify the predicate. Again, immediately the teacher would double underline the predicate of the sentence on the board with a green marker. Mrs. Yglesias once more used the tactics of alternating ELL students and English speakers to participate answering questions. The…

The United States Government has 27 expressed powers. Almost all of the expressed powers of Congress are found in Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution. Expressed powers are those delegated powers of the National Government that are spelled out in the Constitution, they are also called the "enumerated powers"(McClenaghan). Three powers that stick out from the rest of the 27 are the commerce power, the borrowing power, and the power to declare war. Commerce is defined as the buying and selling of goods and services.…

English to me was a malevolent thing that followed me around everywhere, around every corner. It was a formidable foe, a task greater than learning to tie my shoes. I could not grasp the ambiguous logic that English contained. Before taking AP Lang, I did not know what a “pronoun” was, or that apostrophes meant that a word was either possessive or a contraction, concepts many elementary schoolers would find rudimentary.…

Tesia Marshik* asserts that meaningful context is the most important element in learning and remembering. But there are two main drawbacks to this approach to sentence instruction: first, it’s very time-intensive for both students and instructor; second, it does not encourage students to understand the principles behind clear and correct sentence structure; these principles are essential to correct errors and create varied, yet clear and correct, sentences. Another approach to helping students write clear, varied, and correct sentences has the instructor teaching the class as a whole about locating and correcting errors and also about crafting sentences. Ideally, these two approaches are combined. Learning grammatical terms, the…
