The Giver Book Comparison
In today's society, the majority of popular teen books have a storyline that has a basic hero and villain plot, with some internal conflict added in for the hero. Most of the time the hero will stick out or be different for everyone else or the regulations. In “The Giver” by Lois Lowry we see this often used storyline. But the film adaption had decided to go along with more of a romance with a little of action placed into it. While yes there were some differences between the book and the movie, Philip Noyce did an amazing job at adapting the storyline and creating a picture to go along with the words. There are plenty of similarities that are between the movie and the actual book itself. In the story, the biggest similarity is obviously …show more content…
The first one we see is Jonas is not obviously twelve as he is in the book. In the movie, the numbers such as 12 refer to grade level. This detail is there to add more maturity to the movie. This component changes the theme. This added a romance to the story and made a fionas character more developed and important to the story. Due to the romance, Jonas is able to share some of his training with her. That is one detail that adds more action to the story as in terms of heroism. The next difference is that asher’s assignment changes. Asher was a comical character and seen as a fun guy. So his assignment as assistant director of recreation makes plenty of sense when it was given to him in the book it went along with the character. But what didn't make sense was the assignment changing, from (book to movie), to drone pilot. It was odd, Giving someone who is careless and forgetful a task that requires attention and precision. But one can see that later as his character grows that becoming a drone pilot helped him find Jonas.becoming a drone pilot changed his character and made him more focused, and this later puts his friendship in jeopardy with Jonas. The final major difference is the chief elder. As a reader one can tell that the only main inportant people in the story is jonas, gabe and the giver. But when the film adaption comes into play it is a little different. The chief elder plays a much more importtant

Movies and books are always different; in a movie you can show multiple characters, and in most books you're stuck in one character's narrative. For instance in the book The Giver the character Fiona doesn’t care about Jonas as deeply as she does in the movie. In the movie she stops her injections, and she starts to love Jonas. However in the book she only “enjoys having Jonas’s company”. In the movie she also helps Jonas steal Gabe before he is killed, and she is put in the community jail for helping him. Before she is going to be released she talks about how she has felt things. That she knows what it is like to truly feel, and in the book she isn’t this unorthodox.…

In the book they made small changes to certain things that affected the mood of the story. First they changed the daily pill to a injection, this made it harder for Jonas to avoid taking it because he had to put its blood on the apple and scan the apple without being caught. Another change is that Jonas, Fiona and Asher were all 16 in the movie instead of 12. This made the characters maturer and that the relationships made more sense. Also when the Giver would give memories to Jonas he would have to put his hands on his back but in the movie they only had to be touching hands. This probably was a change because of time and because it's easier just having to hold someone's hands.his combines with another change that instead of the future gibbers…

In "The Giver", a few similarities I saw were the characters, the setting, and the plot. Additional similarities that stuck out were when Jonas ran away with Gabe, when Jonas transferred memories to Gabe, Jonas seeing beyond, and when Jonas's father killed one of the twins. A few differences I saw between the book and the movie were the ages of Jonas, Fiona, Lily, And Asher in the book Jonas, Fiona, and Asher are 12 but in the movie they are 18, in the book Lily is 8 but in the movie she is 9. Another difference I saw between the book and the movie was with the Chief Elder in the book, you don't really hear much from the Chief Elder but the when you watch the movie 30 or 40% of the time you get recognition of the Chief…

For this assignment I watched the movie The Giver because although I had read the book before I didn’t actually remember much about it. Even though the book is better than the movie, I actually really enjoyed the movie and found it extremely interesting. It all begins with the memories from the past were being erased and a boundary being set to keep the memories away. Everyday everyone would mandatorily have to get injected even though they didn’t know why, they would happen because they found to be a normal routine embedded into their culture. Like we discussed in class, culture is learned and in this particular movie they have learned to not have emotional and they are given a designated career/role in society once they graduate.…
