How The Global Village School made a significant change in my life.
The Global Village School Located in downtown Decatur, Georgia is a leading education provider to teenage girls from across the countries experiencing war. Its mission is “to help international students from war- torn countries adjust to education in America.” As a non- profit organization, the Global Village School has impacted the lives of many refugee girls whose hope had been dashed by events of war in their native countries. After the interruption of their education by the experiences of war and the subsequent events as refugees, most of the teenage girls drop out of public school as the situation cannot offer them a chance to pursue their studies. In the fall of 2011 as part of my class curriculum, I was ordered to do 15 hours community service at the Global Village School. Particularly, when one volunteers in the school there are tremendous positive changes dawned on them. Since I have been given the opportunity to volunteer and work with the girls I have learned to be more appreciative, supportive, and inspirational. One of the positive impacts the volunteer work at the Global Village School has had in my life has to do with appreciation of myself and life in general. Prior to my experience at the Global Village School, I just took so many things for granted I never imagined that the things that I obtained and enjoyed almost without incurring a cost would be so expensive to somebody. For instance, as a teenager, I never cared about peace. In fact, I did not know how it felt to be denied basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing as a result of war. It never occurred to me that an innocent teenage girl could take on the responsibilities of a father and mother. I never imagined myself spending a day, let alone weeks, without food. In short, the encounter with the girls at the Global Village School made my world make a turnaround. I began
