Things I Ve Done To Make A Difference
What is something I have done to make a difference? Hmmmm...that’s a great question. I’d like to think that I’m a pretty decent person who cares about my community. However, after reading this essay question I really had to search my mind to think of how my presence has made a difference in the world.

There isn’t one major thing I’ve done to make a difference, but I have done many small things that have contributed positively to my community. Throughout late middle school and all of high school I have participated in an organization called the National Honor Society. One of the four important criteria of being a member is to serve others. Every year each member of the club has to find at least one way to volunteer in the community.

Some members try and find the easy way out (at least that’s what I think), and make posters to hang

While helping there only takes a few hours, the work is just a little bit tiring, especially after a long day.

Recently after a long day of school, piano lessons, and working out, I raced to Manna. While I was pretty exhausted myself, I was able to dedicate just a few hours of my time to make others lives better.

As I scanned the aisles for the items on the lists, I was able to really appreciate how thankful I am for my life. While many things seem to go wrong, those minor details really aren’t that big of a deal. There is always someone that has is worse. While I am worrying about attending college, or taking a test, I should refocus my thoughts, and just be thankful that I have the opportunity to get an education, as well as come home to a roof over my head and food to eat. I am grateful that such a simple activity was able to teach me a lesson while I was helping others. Volunteering makes not only a difference for others, but also in my

Being involved with Project 18 has impacted both the high school and the community throughout the last year. Project 18 also known as Political Action in which students volunteer for the community as well as candidates during the upcoming elections. I have volunteer to help numerous candidates in many ways such as door knockings and setting up signs. Our school annually has a THON that I have attended and been a part of to positively affect the high school as well as numerous foundations. When elections come around I have went around with fellow classmates to get people who are 18 or will be before the election to register to vote. In Zora Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, we get a look into the life of an African American woman who faces difficulties because of her race and sex. African American women at that time were at the bottom of society. They could not voice their opinion or express their ideas. Their job was to work and do what they are told. They were neither respected nor viewed as valuable to society. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Crawford, despite her skin color and gender, is determined to achieve her goals. She goes on a journey of self-realization and is able to find herself in a few different ways. One way she approached the journey is by challenging the men in her life that are dominating and trying to control her. Another way she tries to find herself is through romance and sexual desire. She wants the freedom to love whoever she wants and be loved by them. She wants the type of love that is real and not controlling. Janie spends many years trying to find the love she desires from the men she marries. She goes through three relationships that test her strengths and ability to love. Lastly she will be able to find herself by finding her space. In most of her relationships she is prevented from exploring…

Helping my community opened up a new side of me and showed me that helping out the people around me was something I enjoyed doing. I’ve volunteered at Rancho Elementary multiple times and will continue to do so over every chance I get as it makes me happy to help my community and see other people having fun. I was also a part of the Scripps Spelling Bee in 6th grade and after many days of hard work and effort, I placed 1st in the school and proceeded to place 2nd in all of…

Since middle school, I have been involved in numerous local beach and river cleanup events. In Nature Academy I was able to design my own community service project. During 7th grade, I banded together with a few fellow classmates and we decided to clean up the streets of Felton one staple at a time. The state of the poles there were horrible; covered in the metal pieces from prior flyers posted there. After several weeks and hours, we had defeated the evil staples. In 8th grade, I had done some more community service on a smaller scale. By helping out in the community garden at school, I had helped the crops grow, that were then disbursed to families in need of fresh…

I believe that community service and volunteer work are very important. The best thing a person can donate is their time. I feel it’s every individual’s responsibility and beyond. In my community, I have displayed a great amount of service. In school, I am a peer helper during my P.E. hour to help the kids with disabilities perform P.E. like any other high school student would. I also went to a prom for kids with disabilities at my church as a date/escort for one of the kids. Over the summer I worked as a respite worker for a week to help a young girl with Down syndrome at a church camp. Also, one of my favorite times of the year is when I get the opportunity to volunteer at the softball Special Olympics. Because a lot of these kids and adults do not have the ability to perform these tasks on their own, I become a dependent companion for them to lean on. I show my leadership by doing what is right if someone were to make fun of them, and treating them like I would treat a friend. This all wraps into the patriotism for our country. I do not do these actions to just call myself patriotic; I do it because I enjoy to and believe that it is my duty as a good…
