Things I Learned In My Internship
Daniela West
PR Internship Final Paper When I decided to participate in an internship I developed the goal of gaining real life experience in the multiple facets of public relations. In my internship I met my overall goal and my multiple objectives. This internship allowed me to do this because it had multiple clients that had a variety of needs. The different needs of the clients allowed my develop skill sets in the multiple facets. I developed my writing and design skills by developing a newsletter and holiday card with the help of the other intern. I learned how to utilize social media with a client that is difficult to develop social media for. I received a taste of event planning, but did not officially plan an event. I also learned many small things like how to get space in a newspaper, media relations, costs of advertising, use of many online tools, and technical terms that are used in the public relations field. Learning all of these things have made me more confident in entering the work force and helped me achieve my goals and objectives that I set out for myself in my internship. My internship showed me how to develop media relations. I have heard about the importance of media relations within classes, and this internship really helped me in seeing the importance of this in the real world. I also believe that crisis communication is an important concept in public relations and while I know you cannot plan for a crisis, I really would have benefited if we were to do something to practice for a crisis. The biggest thing I have taken from classes and applied to my internship are writing and publications. I applied the different types of writing like press releases and stories. I took the concept of C.R.A.P. from publications and applied it in my internship in our multiple publications assignments of a newsletter, a card, and a couple of constant contacts. I believe that the process of gaining an internship is really good except for one thing. I do

Throughout these organizations I am either serving as a mentor or using my media skills. For example, with Chapel Assistants I have the opportunity to help prepare for each chapel service but I also serve in the Media Ministry which is responsible for making CD’s for each service, mailing CDs to attendees, and being sure the speaker gets a copy of their sermon. I love the job because I truly get to build relationships with those that attend chapel. Within the Spotlight Network I am currently a reporter in which I report events that are going on campus. This year the Spotlight Network will have its own shows and I will serve as a reporter of the shows. With Howard Players I get work on my acting skills by attending workshops. Alternative Spring Break, was my chance to be able to spend an entire week Mentoring students at Normandy High School which is located in Ferguson Missouri. To this day I continue to mentor those students I met through email. In the Freshman Leadership Academy my freshman year all year I was taught to be a leader and even had the opportunity to travel to China and provide service. Because I am a sophomore I get to use the things I learn to help mentor a current freshman. Lastly, Matriculate is a recent organization that is affiliated with Howard’s campus in which through google hangout I mentor students in low income high school.…

I can remember when I did my undergrad internship at a rehabilitation center; the Physical Therapist explained to me that if a person has ruptured their Achilles tendon, calf raises were one the best exercises. This exercise was potentially one of the best due to it strengthening the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. He also explained that many runners should focus on strengthening exercises, simply because of the wear and tear running they are more susceptible to this type of injury.…

Some of the 21st Century Skills that this internship applied are Civic Literacy and Engagement, Communication Skills, Global Awareness, Interpersonal Skills, Self-Directional Skills, and Thinking and Problem Solving. During this internship I learned more about the deaf community in education and how the government handles it. Communication Skills and Global Awareness also played an important factor because obviously I have to communicate with the kids and in this experience I learned how to interact with these students and teachers. I also learned how the learning environment is like for the interpreters and students and was able to apply it to my internship and hopefully to my Senior Project. Interpersonal Skills is something that I had a difficult time with the interpreters.…

I have secured an internship at a local retailer in Tallahassee. The shoe store just opened less than a year ago, and the business is already blossoming! I choose to take part in this organization over others because of the experience I can gain. My internship is focused on understanding how a business operates and how to manage it. Unlike other internships, I will be learning how to do a myriad of things. Although I do not want to work store line, this experience will allow me to learn about the business of retail. The best part of the internship was shadowing the principal. Like we model for our students, it was good to see a typical day for a principal. While I was not able to shadow for a whole day, I was able to select items that I wanted to participate in. These included attending Board Meetings, Parent Teacher Association, Intervention and Referral Services, IEP/504’s, budget planning, hiring, discipline and supervising sports events. These activities showed what events a principal participant in when they are not observing teachers or attending workshops.…

One of the more important things I learned from this internship is that I don’t want to work in California; I dislike the hyper social, flaky, culture. I also learned a lot about how working with a living history program feels like. It was more social than I imagined. This knowledge will affect my life plan in that I am sure I don’t want to go to college or pursue a career in California. I also think I am more inclined to seek a career as a Librarian than as a schoolteacher, given that enjoyed working in a library much more than working in a…

Working with spreadsheets and collecting payments helped me understand the value of good accounting in order to become not only a better businessman, but also generally better at organizing tasks in my life. I learned to become more goal oriented, and set timely check points for a project in order to transform ideas into a working. Working with my partner to coordinate schedules (for instance, who would drive, who would place orders, who would collect payments and when) helped me understand the value of teamwork when starting a small business. Managing our business helped us to become better professionals, as we had to interact with customers as well as a competing business. We learned and appreciated the value of providing a unique good to a community and creating a niche for that good. Overall, this experience helped us to become more independent people, individuals who created an experience for themselves (the first small entrepreneurship started at our high school) instead of just reading about it or watching it on…

My second week at my internship I learned and worked with the different groups of people that volunteer at Cradles to Crayons. At Cradles to Crayons it is seasonal switch, which means the agency was switches all their spring/summer supplies to their fall/winter supplies. It was a lot of heavy lifting and organizing the clothes by gender and sizes. I worked with the volunteers and workers at Cradles to Crayons to complete the seasonal switch. I got to see how much is donated to this agency, which is a lot. It was a nice experience because I got to meet a lot of the people that work at Cradles to Crayons. I also worked with another intern and we worked with partner relations, we gave the case managers their deliveries for the week.…
