Tim Burton's Costuming Style
Tim Burton's style of costuming is unique in his own way. He makes everyone look a little different when they look the same. In the clothing he wants the people in his movie to wear bright clothes to stand out. The ladies wear jewelry to make themselves look fancy and nice. In the movie Edward Scissorhands, Edward is always wearing dark clothes and stands out the most from everyone else. Tim Burton’s style is a way for him to express his way of dressing and what he would like to do with clothes.Tim Burton’s style depends on what movie he is making. Some movies will be dark in the lighting so it all depends on what you wear to make you stand out. Tim Burton is an amazing custom artist as well as writer.

    In particular, in Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton has utilised costuming and the actions of the character Edward to explore the idea of the power of your true identity has. This relates to the previous discussion on Burton showing special concerns about outcasts through his use of colour palette, as outcasts often change their identity to fit in. However through the characterisation of Edward burton is telling the viewer that you don't need to change who you are, as are who you are and that okay. This is seen at the end of the selected sequence, as a long shot allows the audience to see the black leather suit with a number of buckles that Edward is wearing. His costume is peculiar and has similarities to a straight jacket, but practically it is suitable for him. Meaning that thick heavy fabric will stop him from cutting himself with his scissor hands. The audience also sees how Edwards costume is part of him later on in the film when Peg takes Edward home and tries to dress him in a normal white shirt and grey pants. He is unable to take his leather suit off and has to put the normal clothes over top. This is because it is part of him and the director is trying to say to the audience that the character, although trying to fit into a new environment, he is remaining true to himself to keep his true identity at his core. This is also seen through his actions, because despite the fact that Edward was actually a vulnerable character who wanted to be loved, as seen through his dialogue, “wait, don’t go” during the sequence, Edward ends up back where he started, alone and isolated in his…

    In this essay I will be talking about different types of sound and lighting among these three movies. How they differentiate and how they are similar. The first cinematic technique I studied while watching these movies was sound. Non-diegetic sound is when the characters cannot hear the music or sound, it is used for foreshadowing, it can add suspense, happiness or cheerfulness. Diegetic sound is when the characters can obviously hear the music or sound. In The Corpse Bride Tim Burton uses non-diegetic sound a lot like when Victor is in the woods practicing his vows there is quiet, slow music. When Emily comes back from the dead Victor runs and in the back there is loud fast paced suspenseful music. Diegetic sound is used when Victor and Barkis Bittern are fighting the characters could hear the sword and fork clanking together when hit and when the sword chopped the alter the characters would be able to hear that. It is also used when Victor is running through the woods to get away from Emily, Victor snaps a few branches and accidently snags his shirt, all the birds and owls are squalling away. Victor’s character can hear these diegetic noises. In Edward Scissorhands Tim Burton uses non-diegetic sound to show suspense. When Peg enters Edwards mansion and when she walks up the stairs there is slow suspenseful music that shows something’s not right. When Peg figures out that Edward has scissors on his hands the music gets loud and fast, but soon stops when she realizes he’s completely harmless. When Edward gets mad because he sees Kim go towards Jim, Edward storms off and the music gets very fast and loud because Edward is mad, he cannot hear this music himself though. Diegetic sound in this movie is when Edward moves his hands; the characters can obviously hear a snipping sound.
