Understand why effective communication is important in the work setting
Unit 051 Outcome 1

To gain knowledge and share information and ideas.
To give reassurance and show acknowledgement.
To express feelings and needs.
To build relationships and maintain them.

Communication affects relationships within the setting in a variety of ways. The positive affects are you will have a better relationship with the children as this will help with their learning and development because they will be talking to you about what they like/dislike and their interests. They will feel at ease with you and more trusting and may be more likely to confide in you. They will feel happier and important.
You can keep parents/carers informed about any upcoming events, keep them updated on their child’s progress, be aware of any problems or concerns which could give you the opportunity to nip them in the bud before they potentially become bigger. They will feel comforted in the knowledge that you are interested in them and their child.
Communication amongst the staff will give the setting a happier ambience. Everybody will feel at ease resulting in a good atmosphere where they know what is required of them. Good communication is essential for maintaining a productive workplace.
There can be however some negative forms of communication. Gossiping amongst staff can cause a bad atmosphere and can be very upsetting and have a detrimental effect on staff morale, assumptions can be made when the full story is not known. Persistent intended negative communication can add stress within the setting which makes it difficult to develop or maintain a productive workplace. Private and confidential information may be overheard by the wrong person.

I have worked with my current employer for six months. I work with clients with a learning disability, within a supported housing setting. My current job role is as a ‘care assistant’. I am responsible for providing support to the service user’s, which includes: Personal care, assisting with meal preparation, assisting with medication, assisting with meal planning, and maintaining records for service delivered. I received an induction training course when I first joined the company, which provided specialised training relating to the learning disability sector. I receive regular supervision with my line manager, where I can discuss any problems, and get support. I can also request training, and my manager can highlight areas where she thinks I would benefit from further training in. I attend regular refresher courses in training, so that I am up to date with the current standards required for my role. I treat all service users with respect and dignity, and my work practices reflect and promote equal opportunities. I have read, and understand my Company’s policies and procedures, and am aware of what to do in most circumstances, and the correct reporting/recording procedures to follow. I always work in a professional manner, and ensure all service user information is kept up to date, and confidential.…
