Verna Monologue
Bright, bold, and vivid the flash hit me with a sudden rush. The dark and dismal barn where I once sat dissipated as the luscious green grass, dark blue sky, and the endearing silver moon stood in front of me. Falling on the grass, my fingers spontaneously decided to play with its soft texture. Finally, I directed my attention to the lovely couple who were staring at me, not perplexed by my sudden fall to this exquisite planet which went by the name of Verna. I stumbled as I attempted to stand up, and the couple immediately rushed to my much needed help. Puzzled by their sudden reaction to help, I latched onto the offered hand with great appreciation.
“Are you alright, sweetie?” the man questioned with such care in his voice. The voice of the

“You poor child, how could such a thing occur?” the woman spoke, genuinely curious.
“He had to get a vaccination to prevent some disease that was deteriorating his immune system. The vaccination was only permitting a 10% chance of survival, and my dad decided to take the risk. It failed. I came to Verna to find happiness and escape the cruel truth that I never want to face,” I responded with undeniable sorrow. Silence. It filled the room and engulfed everybody to their own dispersed thoughts. “You will find your escape at Verna. Verna will give you the peace, joy, and bliss you truly want and will dwindle away the truth you fear to face,” the man has spoken with affection, assertiveness, and affirmation.
That’s exactly what I did. Day by day, I got lost in laughter and happiness living with the couple who soon told me their names as Carla and James, and their son, Theo. I kept myself engaged to as many activities Verna could offer. At Verna, I remained truly and uncontrollably ecstatic. I forgot all about the cruelty of my dad's death and finally became free as Verna mesmerized me with all of its

Edna Vale was a well known name, yet she lived close to my old way of life. The power lines crossed in front of the top rows of windows on the hilly streets and skinny kids with dirty hair played on flaking blue stone sidewalks that tilted at odd angles from years of neglect. Candy wrappers and butts were evident in the sparse patches of grass in front. At the right house, I found my way up worn stairs to where Edna kept an address. There were the dried smells of steaks from indeterminate times along the way.…

Her blouse was gone, replaced by a simple black dress. As soon as she got up to look around, she noticed that the environment around her was entirely different than that of the drive-in restuarant or her house. The sky was black, encompassed by large glowing rings of what looked to be ancient texts, and on its horizon was a rather large-looking moon. Connie felt oddly calm in this place, the red grass contrasted nicely with the dark sky. As she scanned her surrounding she found a path leading down.…

Eighty families lost children to a vicious disease that physicians had not yet developed a vaccine for immunity. Tina Albertson, a pediatric resident, recalls a young girl who had come in contact with whooping cough, “She was a six-week old girl with a sister and brother, four and six. The family had chosen not to immunize, and the week she was born, her siblings both had whooping cough. When they’re real little, the babies don’t whoop, they just stop breathing. This little girl was septic by the time they got her here” (Allen 3). Lastly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states why children need vaccines at an early age, “Children are given vaccines at a young age because this is when they are most vulnerable to certain disease” (Centers 1).…
