Video Games And Gun Violence Essay
Halo, Call of Duty, and Gears of War are just three of many grossly popular video games today, and they have one main thing in common: violence. Whether one is shooting down Nazi soldiers on the beaches of Normandy or sawing apart Locust drones on the planet Sera with his or her lancer, one is engaging in extremely violent video-game action, and probably having a lot of fun doing so. With the rapid growth of intensely violent games, parents and politicians across the nation have begun to protest against violence in video games and have even gone as far as to say it is the cause of violence in America’s youth. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist from Portland, Oregon even said that these shooters carried out their massacre because their parents took away their video games. Block said that the two relied heavily on online computer games as a means to express their anger. Eric Kain disagrees with Block, however, in his article “The Truth About Video Games and Gun Violence.” He says “that’s clearly an oversimplification. The age and gender of many mass shooters, including Columbine 's, places them right in the target demographic for first-person-shooter video games. And people between ages 18 and 25 also tend to report the highest rates of mental-health issues. Harris and Klebold 's complex mental-health problems have been well documented” (Kain, Works Cited #3). Kain’s argument resonates well with many others. One would agree that people seem to jump to conclusions when faced with horrific tragedies like this. They look at the first convincing piece of evidence without digging deep to really find out what happened. These two boys clearly had serious mental issues, but people were too fixated on the façade of violent video game obsession to find a viable reason why these two chose to do something like this.     Rampage, shootings, killing, murder, blood, and gore are all things that people think of when they hear the words, “Video Game.” Video games have quickly taken on the role of being harmful too kids. Could this be true? Crime rates have been on the rise for the last five decades, so we must ask do video games have anything to do with this? Are video games destroying our children? Olson, M.P.H., S.D., “it is impossible to know exactly what caused these teens to attack their own classmates and teachers … one possible contributing factor is violent video games.” It 's very difficult to document whether video and computer games contribute to violence such as criminal assault.     Controversial subjects comes in all forms and fashions and sometimes presents disagreements within. The controversial subject that I have chosen has been around for many years and have allowed individuals to take a stand for their opinions about the situation. “The debates on video games violence has arguably been narrow, in that it assumes that such games have only negative effects and ignores the possibility of positive effects”. (Ferguson, C.J, 2007) Within the Article it provides stability and creditability in the problem of violence in video games.     Video games are basically known as a staple among American teenagers. Many teenage boys and even some girls spend hours of their day staring at the TV screen and rapidly pushing buttons on a controller. Many of the top selling games in America strongly involve violence in their gameplay. These types of games raise many questions about how they affect the people playing the games. Are there negative consequences or are these claims just made up? There is research to back up both claims but the negative effects of violent video games seem to overpower the positives of recreational violent video game play. Manufacturers should enforce their own policy towards people who play their games in a more efficient way. Video games can give a false sense of reality and allow gamers to become so immersed into their game play that lines between real life situations and game play situations begin to blend together. This time spent playing games can take away from other activities. Important things like schoolwork and grades can be affected by spending all one’s time playing games instead of focusing on more important things. It can cause people that play the games to go to sleep super late in the night. The students then have to wake up early and go to school tired and will not be able to focus and stay awake to learn the material being taught. Video games also spur a sedimentary lifestyle.     Harris and Klebold were normal high school students. When they were little, both were reported to play little league baseball, soccer, and they also participated in boy scouts. Both became more interested in computers as they grew older. They bonded over the same violent video games, and violent movies. And later, they both agreed to attack the school. They spent a year planning the attack, collecting explosives and weapons. But how did they gather the materials without their parents knowing? Since both boys were not old enough to purchase a weapon, more than likely they both purchased them from the internet--since it is easy access for almost anyone. The two then planted two 20-pound propane bombs in the school cafeteria. The authorities later discovered the bombs were never ignited. And the day of the shooting, both teens were covered in weapons: dozens of potency devices, seven knives, two illegal sawed-off shotguns, a 9 millimeter semiautomatic assault pistol and semiautomatic carbine rifle, as well as a substantial amount of ammunition. At about 11:30 a.m., both boys went into the school and killed 12 of their fellow classmates and teachers.
