Villani Mentor Role

Dunne and Villani shed great insight on four roles of a mentor. The roles a mentor may take are as a collegial guide, consultant, seasoned teacher, and coach. When a mentor takes the role as a collegial guide they assist their mentee with learning about the ‘behind the scene’ of the job. A collegial guide role as a mentor provides mentees with guidelines related to the school and district. Teaches mentee about the history of the school while assuring he/or she is becoming acquainted in their new work space. The next role a mentor can take on is as a consultant. A mentor in the role of a consultant provides mentee with advice of how to appropriately manage and handle potential challenges one will face. The consultant is relied on to understand the problem and present solutions.
A seasoned teacher “represents the professionalism developed over years of increasingly effective classroom management and instruction” (Dunne & Villani, 2007, pg. 32). Assuming the role as a seasoned teacher, one will demonstrate effective classroom strategies, in addition to providing insightful advice and guidance regarding classroom management and organization. A mentor in this role is consistently assisting mentee to fully equip them with the necessary tools to assure a prosperous beginning of their careers. The final role Dunne and Villani describe that one may fulfill as a mentor is a coach. In the role of a coach, one provides constructive feedback to mentee on things such as planning, creating positive leaning environment, and managing time.
