What America Means To Me Essay
What this poem means to me is that even though Americas days, past and future, was hard with war and dangerous ways it is still the best country to the author. In a way I agree with the author of the poem “America” because this country has done many things to help out its people and even though the past was dark the future would be brighter than the sun. The dark days of America are still in us but those dark days made America how it is now. African Americans, Indians such as the; Cheyenne, Quapaw, and the other American Indians that faced prejudice and discrimination in the Indian wars helped America become how it is now. America has gone through tough times such as; racism, prejudice, and laws or groups that support that cause like the Jim Crow Laws, and the KKK’s (Klux Klux Klan’s). Immigrants from all over the world went through tough times to get us where we are now and we learn about these poems and their history so we don’t make the same mistake. Many people don’t understand the importance of learning the past and the history behind America and behind us the people of the United States of America. I included this to show why we learn this history and why we are writing what we think about America. In the poem “I, Too” states how even though they are not white but black it is just a darker brother of everybody else and they should be treated the same with no discrimination or prejudice. The line in the poem that supports this is,” I am the darker brother”. From this line I can tell that even though my skin is different I should be treated with the same respect and granted American citizenship. This poem will relate to anybody who faced racist jokes (on purpose), and left out just because of their skin tone or
