The Hobbit and the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, are famous books written by J.R.R. Tolkien and have inspired and sparked the minds of readers for generations. Even though J.R.R. Tolkien is deceased, his legend still lives on. Monsters, dragons, Orcs, Hobbits, and dwarves are just a few of the magical creatures in his fantastical stories. Creating creatures and the ingenuity to bring them to life on paper was a skill Tolkien certainly excelled in. Once, Tolkien lived in a country village called Sarehole. Sarehole was much more exciting than the city. The giant trees, rushing rivers, and long grass fields would keep Tolkien and his little brother, Hilary, entertained for hours. Indeed, this little village would later be the inspiration for the Shire in his books. As he got older Tolkien’s fascination with words and languages would only increase. Tolkien’s childhood however, would be faced with many hardships. Tolkien lost his father at age three and at age twelve he lost his mother as well. When Tolkien was older he got a scholarship to the prestigious University of Oxford where later he would become a professor of languages. It took years for Tolkien to finish The Hobbit and he would share his progress with family and friends. In September of 1937, The Hobbit was finally published and by Christmas over fifteen-hundred copies were sold. So great was its success that it won the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. Later, Tolkien would write the trilogy The Lord of The Rings which became very popular. Tolkien would later write another book called The Silmarillion. However, it was never completed before his death. Despite it never being completed, Tolkien believed it to be his most important book.
