Why Are Coaches Important

Throughout the world, millions of people participate in sports, whether it be professionally or at the amateur level, one thing that all teams have in common is a coach. A coach is supposed to guide their team and be the one players can look to for help, but what makes a coach a good one? For one to be a good coach, they must posses moral virtue and be able to instruct their players to be the best they can be, not just on the playing field but also in life. Good coaches will build strong relationships with their players and teach them valuable life lessons because they know that what one can learn from sports is so much more than just how to play the game. A players relationship with their coach can be one that lasts a lifetime or what changes the path they are going down. A good coach will make the most of their opportunity to make a lasting impression on their players.
The number of awards and shiny trophies can easily make one believe that the coach is an excellent one. But truly, winning is not worth it unless there is something finer and more noble behind it (Winning & Losing, Victory & Defeat). Ed Thomas, Pat Summit, Bill Belichick, and Tony La Russa are all considered to be outstanding coaches in their respective sports, but this is not just because they have all been winners. Each of these coaches understand that there is so much more to the game, and to life, then just to win. A good coach, such as the four previous examples, also do not get caught up in their own ego. They do not take self-worth by what their record is or put to much emphasis on the outcomes of games. Theses types of coaches, the ones who do put emphasis on the big games and let themselves be defined by a win or loss, are unsuccessful. They become to consumed by what their reputation is and how their team may effect their ego. A good coach is not someone who lets what the world says define them or how they will coach their
