Why Are Honor Codes Important

Countless schools have implemented honor codes. These are principles that are intended to foster integrity. Academic misconduct can range between cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation, fabrication of document (s), Improper use of resources provided by the school, theft, etc. Honor codes are important because it builds reliability, honesty, it challenges students to academically produce originality in their work and enforces responsibility. At the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), Scholars registered at this school are presumed to be of a good moral character, talented, and are expected to display acceptable standards of conduct. These standard are to be held both on and off campus. Having read the student handbook, the policies and regulations of the University implemented are based on the expectations that students will be responsible for their own
With a zero-tolerance policy, it is anticipated that students will be governed by a respect for the rights of others and for the commonly accepted standards and morals of the public. I believe the University of the Virgin Islands should continue to establish and maintain the honor system. Students often enroll in the university not having the proper knowledge or skills required to take college-level courses. Many may disagree with me on this, but how would they feel if someone were to take their work, publish it and do not credit them for being the fountain of knowledge. I understand that sometimes students may plagiarize without the intent to commit the crime; however, that does not mean eliminate the honor code. If any, the code should be revised a little with discretion to those who make those mistakes. I am a criminal justice major. Thus, I pride myself on being very honest. I can not hide, lie, nor take anything unlawfully. Students should work hard for what they want to achieve
