First of all, cursive (depending on who you are) might never be used often, if the person finds it easier to write in print.
There are more relevant things in life that schools should start teaching, rather than cursive (examples: how to pay income tax, how to get a mortgage ect). It should be up to the student whether they think it would be a good idea, to enroll in a class that teaches him/her cursive. Of course, I’m not saying we should stop teaching handwriting altogether, I just think that teaching cursive, isn’t helpful. Perhaps we could teach them to sign their name, but that’s probably the only important purpose cursive serves. More people can read print rather than cursive now, & in case you didn’t know when you’ve know only how to print your whole life, it’s not easy, like… AT ALL, cursive’s never really helped me, I don’t see why so many people are trying to defend
it. Additionally, most of the evidence someone who likes cursive will give you, only applies to handwriting, not just cursive. But of course, there is absolutely no reason to get rid of handwriting, it helps the brain in literacy, after all, handwriting is a heaping 50% of literacy. But printing is something that most people today understand. Some people will say “well, the Declaration of Independence was written in cursive” now this argument never made sense to me, because of course it would be written in cursive, it signed in the 1700s for crying out loud!! Listen, just because an ‘important’ document was signed in cursive, doesn’t mean that that document’s ‘importantness’ automatically rubs off on that form of handwriting. If we started making cursive mandatory, it would be pretty hard now for kids to learn it, & in case you didn’t know (education system I’m looking at you) people don’t learn really well if at all, if they hate the thing they’re ‘learning’. Finally, There’ the rise of technology, & it is honestly typing on a computer is a lot faster than pen on paper (or the time spent learning cursive). Handwriting helps your bran, but cursive is simply not worth your time & effort to learn and be good in. But really, I find typing a lot less stressful than having to lean close to my paper, I don’t know, that’s just me, But it might be you as well. Cursive has also been dropped from common core standards, there must be at least *ONE* reason that the federal government did that. But really, you tell me which is easier, typing or taking a really long period of time (not exercising mind you) learning the worst form of “art” there could ever hope to be. I just think that cursive’s time has passed, & that we don’t exactly need it anymore. In my opinion, cursive should not be taught in schools. It’s hardly ever used unless you’re very dedicated. Most of the good learning advantages come from handwriting as a whole, not just cursive. & technology is slowly replacing any need for cursive at all. I don’t think most of us will be sad when cursive fades away. You may think we ought to keep cursive around, but the death of cursive is as Inevitable as the death of someone in the 9th century.
