I am seeking a clinical MSW degree because, I want to continue to build in my capacities as a Social Worker by pursing higher education. I am not content with settling for what my BSW qualifies me for. I currently work in the field and have learn a lot of information and skills that I can use to help clients, but a master’s degree will take my knowledge to the next level. My life purpose is to serve family, youth, and children beyond the measures of what my BSW Degree will permit. Before desiring to pursue a MSW degree job search was unsuccessful. Most of the jobs I wanted required a MSW degree.

I will one day open a practice where I can correlate social work core values with those that I believe families should have. The mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values as followed: service, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. Those same core values I believe should be rooted in the core of each family. Service in a family is helping other family member regardless of family roles and titles. Social Justice in a family is educating other family members and working against things that negatively affects them. Dignity and worth of a person in a family is respecting other family member regardless of individual differences. Importance of human relationships in a family is sticking together because, it is what keeps a family bond strong and healthy. Integrity in a family is being truthful and acting in a trustworthy manner towards other family members and their personal belongings. Competence in a family is being knowledgeable of family history, being knowledgeable of family skills /strengths, and effectively using all core values. I was at my Aunt Natalie house when her and her child’s father Dre began to have a heated argument. I remember them screaming about jealousy and respect. Dre comes to me and says Jelaina please tell your aunt that she is wrong and needs to shut up. I never intrude into other family members business unless I see it becoming physical however, then I hear my aunt say who are you talking to? I don’t want to fight with you because we know how that can get. The look on Dre face as he turned and waited on a reaction and/or response from me confirmed that they more than likely had more than verbal arguments in the past. I asked for both of them to come to the table so that we could all talk about the situation. I told them that what we discussed would remain confidential unless I have reason to believe that they are a danger to themselves or others. After carefully discussing the issues I asked to give them both constructive criticism that could help them in the future and we concluded in prayer since I was aware of their faith. In this case I learned that I have excellent communication and people skills, I have the ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds, good listening skills, professionalism, and that I have a non-judgmental attitude. My limitations in this situation consisted of me technically not being qualified to have a therapeutic counseling session and not knowing how to go about given equal discussion time since both
