I once volunteered at the VA medical center and I got to see what it was like to be in a place of care and how patients were being cared for and I liked that feeling of helping the people I was assigned to help, whether it was transfer of a patient to get care, transfer of specimens, helping with the kiosk, it was a good feeling to help those who needed it and that is something that keeps me motivated in pursuing this career path.
When you look up the definition “nurse” in the dictionary it says nursing is basically caring for someone who is sick, and when it’s put in that way it seems simple enough, but I believe there is more to nursing than just caring for a sick person. Its more than just caring for someone on their physical needs, it’s also about caring for them socially, emotionally, and
spiritually. You care for you patients holistically. Patients put their lives in your hands when you are caring for them and that shows trust. It is honorable and a great responsibility. Nursing helps influence others with the passion or those trying to be in the health field and is also a rewarding career. Nurses help people heal through health, illness, injury, pain, birth, and grieve but help fight and prevent diseases and educate society on how to take better care of themselves. Everyone knows nursing is all about helping people and trying to succeed in your work but I believe if you want to be a nurse you have to be open, caring, compassionate, and thoughtful which I am. When you show these qualities they show your character and it also makes your work easier. I belong to this field because growing up I was always compassionate and caring towards others and wanted to make a positive impact in people’s lives. Another reason for my decision is that my two sisters are in the nursing field as well. My older sister is currently a CNA trying to get her LPN and my middle sister is a nurse with a BSN from Immaculata University and they both tell me stories from their jobs which inspired me further and made realize this is the field I want to go into. They told me helping strangers who needed help was the greatest feeling on this planet. I really believe I was meant to be a nurse. I am honest, a great listener and communicator and these are important characteristics that nurses need. Personally, having the chance to make a difference in someone’s life every day is very powerful. The way I interact, what I do, and my attitude can help another person get better and heal and that is something I want to remember for the rest of my life. Nursing does not just help people it also helps yourself. It is a field that is diverse, always changing, exciting and you learn something new every day. The work is tough and consists of long hours on the job and putting your patients’ needs ahead of your needs, but at the end of the day this is what I want to do with my career and life and I am happy and proud of that decision, I will also grow as a person and I will remember helping a stranger and in that moment I will feel fulfilled and rewarded.
