This letter might be the last time you ever hear from me. I’m writing this letter to you to inform you that I entered this war with confidence and a true heart, knowing that I’m fighting for an honorable and true cause.…
My division was stationed in Normandy, France, at the time of the Allied invasion on June 6, 1944. Toward the end of August or early September, Canadian troops captured me near Dieppe.10 I was with a small group of men who were cut off from our main company and overrun by motorized Allied units. For several days we wandered around searching for our unit, until one night we strayed into a field camp of Canadian soldiers. You can well imagine the astonishment all around when we suddenly appeared in their midst. The Canadians didn’t have a guard posted. This was probably better for all because otherwise we might have exchanged gunfire. Instead, we peacefully turned over our weapons and in return received cigarettes.…
Then I got mad. I was because I was so scared. You must be crazy. You goddamn fool, what the hell do you want to join the army for? I just told you to get out of Harlem.”…
Looking around I see fellow soldiers sick, discouraged, and barely clothed. Soldiers at Valley Forge were cheerful in hard times, and healthy when there was sickness.I have decided to re-enlist for three reasons which are, with people dying the army needs me. Even in bad conditions I still want to help. George Washington read the army a motivational talk that influenced me to stay.…
I remained stationary. Somehow, I knew this was coming and yet I did nothing to stop it. I was ashamed of myself. It would have been nice to just stand there and let a bomb hit me. I had already caused enough grief for people in my life.…
The Battle Buddy System is important for both and sometimes all three individuals because it gives one a huge responsibility; to look after another person and know where they are at all times. The System all keeps soldiers, especially newer soldiers, who are still unaware of the dangers of being in the military, safe from unpleasant situations. Those situations can cause trouble for that soldier and if one soldier messes up, they all mess up. So, that other individual takes up for his battle buddy and they both share the blame or the rewards.…
My Dearest Mother, I know you have been worrying about me, for I have been worrying about you as well. Before I left I promised to write you about my first battle on the Western Front. My experience here has been a real eye-opener, the things I have saw, heard, touched, taste, and felt are revolting and painful. My first day in the battle was terrifying, being in the trenches while eggs were being thrown, land creepers were shooting as us from all directions, blind pigs were being fired at us from left and right, and the suicide squad after us. After being in the trenches day after day having the same thing happen over and over again you build a thick skin.…
I am a soldier in the war. I’m sorry for not telling you that I was joining the army but didn’t want to get your hopes up if something happened to me. Life as a soldier was difficult because you had small rations and a lot of people died from scared food and products that were already spoiled. I remember my Sargent telling me to be careful out there in the trenches because enemy forces could rush you at any time and kill you from behind. I will never forget the moment when our dugout was so muddy that we were camouflaging with the mud because of the rain. One side of the barbed wire was a ton of dead bodies that had a lot of flies and rats that were surrounding the bodies and they were eating their flesh. Also on the other side there was a machine gun turret that was killing enemies on No Mans Land. I got shot in the leg and caused me to get a wound and also I ended up in the hospital because I had trench foot, which is a foot disease that kills your skin cells. I will never forget how bad it smelled because of people dying and really sick. We always had to be on our guard because enemies attempted to bomb our trench. The soldiers that survived the bombing were wounded and many of them had lice, which made them very unhealthy because it lived on our skin. When we where on the battlefield we frequently had to have a gas mask present because the air was intoxicated with chemical gases that didn’t let us breathe. Every commander got there own personal rifle because the were in charge. I’m glad I wrote you this letter to tell you the truth. I am so sorry about every thing. I hope you understand why I did this.…
I clumsily loped my way over to him and grabbed his ankles. I turned and started dragging him to the tent, digging my feet into the ground. A lioness’s strength poured through me. Adrenaline surged through my blood, giving me the power I needed to carry a 180 pound man (with gear on). I reached the tent, a mere 20 or so feet away. I bent down and lifted him slowly onto a low table, about two feet off the ground. He grunted in pain.…
Sick of running away. Sick of being useless. This time there was no turning back.…
A problem in my community and unfortunately throughout many other communities as well in West Virginia is the rampant issue of drug addiction. I believe that because of this rise in people addicted to drugs has led to an increase in burglaries, overdoses, and deaths in my area. West Virginia has the highest overdose death rate in the country. In 2014, the most recent year available, 627 people died from drug overdoses here in West Virginia (Griffith, 2016, p. 1A). About ten years ago a classmate of my young son lost his mother due to an overdose situation. It was heartbreaking. She had been battling drug addiction and had recently been through a treatment program, but tragically it had not been successful for her. In my area, there has been…
No one said being a soldier in the army was going to be a walk in the park. Being a soldier means you must have grit and guts and that you have to expect sacrifice. The Continental Army have been in Pennsylvania at Valley Forge since December 19, 1777, with the British only a few miles away in Philadelphia. We are suffering from all the horrible conditions, and many soldiers, since they have served their time, are leaving for home. I now have to make the final decision of either re-enlisting or leaving. I have thought long and hard, but I have decided to re-enlist, because healthy soldiers are needed, I still want to fight for my freedom, and because I want to support the inspiring General Washington.…
Sickness, cold, starvation, and death. These are just a few things we must deal with. It is December in the year 1777 at Valley Forge, a place not big enough to be called a village, 18 miles from Philadelphia. It is two years into the Revolutionary War, my nine month enlistment is almost up and I have to decide, ‘Should I stay, or quit?’ To quit would mean for me to leave and go home to my family, but staying would help my country possibly win the war. I have decided to re-enlist, for honor, knowing we are receiving help, and the content we still feel content. I am…
Scuba diving is a sport that many people enjoy but hardly understand the physics behind. The journey from the pressure of the atmosphere to the deeper depths of the seas is not just a trip that involves breathing air out of a tank and looking at fish. If we were to go on an imaginary journey beginning at the surface and traveling to the bottom of a 300 foot lake your body would under go a change in pressure nearly of 10 times. The physics behind diving starts is with the initial change in pressure on your body, and progresses to taking your first breath underwater, to you body being saturated with gasses and finally at great depths the very oxygen that keeps you alive begins to poison you.…
