Why Is Gun Control Important

With the rise of shootings and homicides throughout the United States, it’s no surprise that citizens should be concerned about their safety. Death tolls continue to increase each year, making mass shootings seemingly a topic of insignificance. As mass shootings become more common, the number of deaths resulting from the incidences seem to become increasingly insignificant. Many believe that stricter gun control policies should be enacted. However, stricter policies will not ensure a safer environment in the community. Gun control laws do not prevent crime. They simply restrict citizens from gaining easy access to a firearm. While this would make it more difficult for citizens to be in possession of a gun, it does not completely restrain their ability to have one. Guns can be accessed through a variety of methods, including through illegal means. By putting preventive measures in place, the only people who would be restrained from gaining access to a gun would
A small problem of gun control arises in ensuring the security of people. Owning a gun allows people an access to self-defense in their homes and in their community. Prohibiting guns would only deny citizens a sense of safety. Possession of guns will discourage criminals from openly robbing houses and stores. Gun control doesn’t necessarily decrease casualties; it simply makes the public more vulnerable. With an increase in school shootings, such as the occurrencesones in Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook, citizens would not gain anything from stricter gun control laws. If staff were allowed to handle guns, there may have been less casualties. Although problems also exist when staff members handle guns, such as their courage in the moment of pulling the trigger, it may help to dissuade shooters. Knowing that they are arriving on a campus with tighter means of protection, mass murderers would be less inclined to
